Graph Paper Size...

Scribble

I know it's not the size of his graph paper that counts, but a how a DM uses it... but...

What size do you guys tend to use?

4 squares per inch?

5 squares per inch?

Something else?

I use the 5 squares per inch--seems perfect. Actually what I've been buying lately is this stuff from Office Depot/Max or one of those anonymous chainstores, booklets that have 5 squares on one side, 4 square on the other. I'm starting to work on a really large dungeon now, and want to get something much larger than 8" x 11.5" however.

Speaking of Office Depot, ever have players assume there are places like that in your campaign where they can go buy whatever magic item listed in the DMG (not to mention whatever whizbang new item mentioned in a 3rd party booklet)?

I keep a variety on hand. 1 square per inch makes great custom battlemap material. The smaller 8 squares per inch paper works great for mapping out large areas in 5' squares. The regular sized 4 or 5 squares per inch I use for smaller scale building maps and such.

I prefer the 4 squares to the inch - I also have the booklet with 4sq/1" on one side and 5sq/1" on the other, and don't like it - When I try to line up levels of a dungeon or floors of a building it throws me off.

I prefer six lines per inch.

Edit -- Incidentally, here is some of the recommended equipment listed in the original D&D rules:

1 3-Ring Notebook (referee and each player)
Graph Paper (6 lines per inch is best)
Sheet Protectors (heaviest possible)
3-Ring Lined Paper
Drafting Equipment and Colored Pencils
Scratch Paper and Pencils
Imagination
1 Patient Referee
