Good Television Mystery Series

I'm a sucker for a good television mystery series. Currently, my two favorites are Murdoch Mysteries (an alt-history series with a focus on science) and Banacek (an older series starring George Peppard which, truth be told, I've watched in its entirety a few times). Are there any other good current (or older) series that I should be looking into?

Columbo is a classic, and it has a spiritual successor in Elspeth. I don’t think the latter is as good- the pacing is a bit rushed- but it’s still a decent show.

I watched one on BritBox a little while ago called Dalgliesh, based on PD James detective novels. British murder mystery fare but well done with a good lead.

There's an old Polish proverb that says "there are many good shows to watch and then there is Banacek".

Columbo has already been mentioned. I'm not sure what sort of mystery fiction sub-genre you like best. There's police procedurals like Bosch, hybrids like Elementary, more classic fare (Granada Television's The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes) and neo-noir (Magnum) among others. I'm a big fan of legal mysteries as well- Perry Mason is the ur-example, but Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer is a good watch as well.

City Homocide (Australian procedural)

If you're willing to go to Old Time Radio, you should definitely check out Your's Truly, Johnny Dollar. Specifically, the Bob Bailey era from 1955 to 1960. Each case is 5 20-minute episodes (originally airing Mon-Fri). Absolute perfection of the radio drama.

If you like Sherlock Holmes in any format, I also recommend looking up Nero Wolfe. I'm partial to The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe radio show, from 1950-1951.

Only Murders in the Building does good season-long mysteries.

Poker Face does a nice twist on the standard mystery procedurals.
