Pathfinder 1E Good prestige class for a ranger?

Hi,

My spell-less Shoanti (human) ranger has just hit 5th level and I am wondering if there are any good PrCs I should be looking at. The PC has an animal companion (fire pelt cougar) and fights in melee with a sword and shield. We are playing in Rise of the Runelords.

Any advice appreciated!

Cheers

Our archer ranger in Rise of the Runelords has stuck with base classes (2 levels of fighter, 8 ranger). She's really frighteningly effective.

It's possible there's something cool in Paths of Prestige, but I'd just stick with ranger, honestly.

Cheers!

I was thinking that myself. I'm pretty new to Pathfinder (although I played a lot of 3.5) and I browsed the prestige classes in the SRD but couldn't really see anything cool. Where are most of the PrCs published anyway?

There are way less prestige classes in Pathfinder and they're generally way less important (because the core classes have better reasons to stay in them now). Archetypes have taken a lot of the customization load and prestige classes sort of fell by the wayside.

Aside from the core rulebook ones, there are some in the Advanced Players Guide and a book of Golarion-flavored ones in Paths of Prestige. A few others are scattered around in setting books and adventure path volumes as well, but I wouldn't stress out about them.

There's a list on d20pfsrd.com, if you're curious.

Cheers!

Archetypes are all about flavor for PF. You gain some abilities by going into them just like you do when multi-classing. You also lose some abilities that you'd normally get if you just stayed straight up vanilla ranger. So I say look at the links the others provided and find the kind of flavor you like best and go for it. It's about having fun.

Well technically you are supposed to take an Archetype prior to level 2, so I'd talk with my GM if I were you to see if they'd allow it. Those replace a lot of your abilities/powers/spells etc.

Looking at these more closely, I think I already have one by virtue of being a spell-less ranger!
