Gloves of Dexterity and a Dwarf in Full Plate

Eye Tyrant

First Post
Just curious... I have a player running a Dwarf Fighter that wears full plate. That gives him a Max Dex Bonus of 1... Would Gloves of Dex allow him any more then a +1 Dex mod (I think not...)? Also, even though it doesn't increase the Max Dex Bonus, it does increase Reflex saves (PHB 3.5), and since that is the case why wouldn't it increase the Max Dex Bonus? Lastly, all the armor check penalties on skills that use Dex like Open lock, are those effected by the Gloves if you are still in heavy armor (I think yes...)? Couldn't find a clear answer on that one.

Any ideas/answers?

I'm sure other people will have more complete answers, but one thing I do know:

Wearing gloves of Dex will not increase his AC, because if you wear full plate you have a max Dex bonus to AC of +1. Final.

The other points I'll let other people answer.

It doesn't matter where your Dex score comes from; only how high it is.

Max Dex limits you to a certain maximum Dex bonus to Armor Class. With that exception, your full Dex modifier counts.

Armor check penalty doesn't have anything to do with Max Dex; it applies to skills regardless of your Dex modifier and vice-versa.

Tallarn, that is the meat of my query... and I agree, but my player raised the other questions about the skills and saves. The reflex save is answered in the books (DMG I think it was under the Gloves entry)... Still curious about the skills though. Why would armor hinder the effectiveness of your hands (ie. Open Lock)?

So he will still get the bonus to Dex from the Gloves, and adjust his skills accordingly, but still take the -6 for the full plate... That sounds fair... And seems to make sense... :)

I'm not trying to hijack this, BUT...

why would do you get a full Reflex save when your armor is effecting your Dex modifier....

and now I am hijacking.... sorry :)

But why couldn't a rogue get a sneak attack on a character that has no positive Dex modifier at all... not to mention a negative one....

If I have imposed to much, I will start a new thread... and delete my post....

Those gloves of dexterity sure come in handy if your dwarf wants to tumble in full plate (3.5 weirdness). :)

Also, the player now has a reason to seek out a set of full plate made of mithral.

That's a good question. :p

Not having a Dex bonus isn't quite the same as being unable to use it. The former is about being so slow that you can't evade quite as many blows as a faster combatant; the latter is about having your guard down.
I.e., a clumsy man can still do his best to avoid being hit where it really hurts even though he can't avoid as many hits as a faster one.
(Besides, heavy armor making you more susceptible to being hit in his vital points wouldn't make too much sense, IMO. ;))

You get a full reflex save even when you're unaware of an attack. Comparitivly, being under some armor isn't that much of a hinderance.

I can see this... but not...

that. That doesn't make sense. If your armor wasn't a hinderance, then why the armor check penalty, the maximum Dex allowance, and the Arcane spell failure?

I think it shoud effect your Reflex too. Why shouldn't it?
