Gangs of New York

Me and my Toe went to see Gangs of NY last night and I was really surprised by what a great movie it was. The plot was nothing new, but the characters both lesser evil and more evil (nobody was really a goodguy) were interesting and very well portrayed/acted. I highly recommend it.

I found it a fairly good film, but not as good as had come to expect from Scorcese.

Daniel Day Lewis was superb - his performance made the film for me. He's the reason why I am still recommending to my friends that they go see it.

Leonardo DeCapprio, though... oh my goodness. What was Scorcese thinking? What was DeCapprio thinking when he accepted the part of a rough Irish immigrant? It's not that he's a bad actor - he's OK, sometimes quite good - but he is totally miscast in this film.

Still, it is a good movie overall. Just go watch it for Daniel Day Lewis putting on the performance of his life!

Couldn't have said it better, myself. His Bill the Butcher was great. Whenever he was on screen (which was most of the time) he lit it up. I would go as far as saying he's one of the best true movie villains in the last 20 years. If not for that character, I really couldn't recommend the flick at all. The supporting cast was good, but not great.

This is a very good movie for just about any other director. For a Scorcese movie, it's just above average. Which is to say it was entertaining and worth the price of admission but not a great (read: Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, etc.) film.

Either way, to those who haven't yet, go see it. :)

I really didn't like the film at all... except for all things Bill. I'm a big Scorsese fan. The man's brilliant, but he has his off-projects. This is one for me.

I didn't care in the LEAST about Leo and Diaz's characters. Their time on screen was time i spent wondering how much longer we had to go. Bill, though... damn. I think he well could be one of the best villains of the last 20 years, as John Crichton said... I think he could hold up against the best villains in the history of film. He was just so good.

Remember the bootleg Episode I tapes that came out, with all the Jar Jar removed? I want something like that- essentially the Butcher Bill reel. Just his scenes, just his dialogue.

To hell with everything else, though. I found this movie to be terribly boring, and going nowhere.
