Gaming store goodness in San Francisco?

Next week I'm going to the Macworld conference in San Francisco and I was curious if anyone knew of any good gaming stores I can visit while there. Or any other general attraction that is a "must" for the area. It'll be my first time in San Fran so I'm pretty ignorant on it. Thanks guys!

My wife and I have visited SF twice and found it a great place and not a bad walk from a bus stop. There is a Games Workshop store and Forbidden Planet in the Metreon as well. Given that you are from Alabama, dont miss out on the chance to go to a Borders, there is one in Union Square.

In what area will you be staying? I would be glad to point out other attractions as one gamer and Alabamian to another.

What people don't realize about SF is that it's one the best foodie towns in the country. Only NYC is better imo.

As far as gaming is concerned, yes Gamescape is really the only game in town (excuse the pun). There are some good stores across the bay (Berkeley) and on the penninsula (San Mateo) but they are too much of a bother to get to from downtown SF.

As a resident of the Bay Area, I've never found Gamescape to be anything special. The quarters are cramped and the regulars are cliquish. The last straw for me was walking in and finding the employees cherry-picking boosters of DDM.

Two shops that are practically as easy to reach as Gamescape, from nearly anywhere in San Francisco, are:

Endgame -- In Oakland, about a block from the City Center BART stop. They have an incredible, roomy display area, and a phenomenal play area, containing about 10 tables, built into a loft.

Games of Berkeley -- In Berkeley, about 50 paces from the Downtown Berkeley BART stop. Again, a really nice, open shop. The game area is kinda small, but workable. The main attraction of GoB is the friendliness of the employees and regulars.

yeah, I didn't see the big deal when I was over there. It's just a store.

my god, I have probably walked past this a dozen times and never knew it was there! will learn to keep eyes open.

As a regular of GoB, I resent being called "friendly." ;) I also know that one of the employees would similarly object. Everyone else is fine, though, and the staff is especially good at helping you learn a new game or find something obscure or order something weird... They have a stranglehold on all things game, and do not want to lose it.

I live six blocks from GoB; know it inside and out. If you have any desire to hop on the train and ride the twenty-five minutes out to Berkeley, then do it. Get off downtown, go upstairs and cross the street, that's it! Lots of food and flicks around there, too, so you won't be starved for entertainment. If you're a FPS gamer, then there's a new store a couple of blocks north called Eudemonia that rents time on machines so you can blow your friends away, too. Eudemonia also sells WotC products, but...stick to Games of Berkeley. They have a flat 10% discount on most WotC stuff, and for the stuff that isn't on sale, you can solve the daily chess puzzler and get 10% off anything in the store.

GoB has game areas in the basement, in the back room, and a small table in the shop, usually used for Magic or something. I know that there's a regular Tuesday night Eberron/minis shindig, but I think they may not be playing next week. If you're interested, I can shoot the DM an email and find out for you. The store has all sorts of regular gaming nights: http://www.gamesofberkeley.com/ I only know the Tuesday night crowd; I don't know what that Thursday night campaign is, but I may know its players, you know?

Secret: the manager plays in the Tuesday night bit, so they're there after-hours; you won't be chased away at 9pm, though your jetlag may send you home anyway. And after your PC is crushed by whatever it is that kills him, you can go a couple doors down and drown your sorrows in pizza, beer, and cookies.

As far as "essential" SF attractions, you will likely be quizzed on Fisherman's Wharf, so try to see that. It's just a big tourist trap, though, so eat your clam chowder, gawk at the sea lions, and run away.

Endgame is far and away the coolest and best gaming store in the Bay Area. Most of that springs from the fact that they have a really great upstairs gaming area and serves as the hub of the RPGA in SF. The staff is great and everyone in there is a real gamer.

As far as other general attractions, there are the standards (GGBridge, Alcatraz, etc) but I don't know how much time you will have. If you feel like splurging on dinner check out Town Hall (342 Howard St, cross street Fremont, about 4 blocks from Moscone Center) or LuLu (816 Folsom between 4th and 5th, one block from Moscone Center).

What's the game store in San Mateo?
Gator Games. I thinks it's on 32nd street a block or so from El Camino Real. I haven't been there in several months but they always struck me as friendly and competent if a bit crowded and small.

Endgame seems to be the destination of choice. I think they are having a minicon next week btw.

Critical Hit is a Bay Area gaming board, and has a discussion about local stores in the event that you end up wandering around farther than just SF: http://www.cilibrin.net/rolldice/viewtopic.php?t=52

The store in San Mateo is Gator Games, and it's over-rated, much like Gamescape (after the Palo Alto store closed, alas; the store in San Ramon was good, though small, and I haven't been there in quite some time). The GG site is @ http://www.gatorgames.com/

Down in San Jose you'll find Game Kastle (who also sell a lot on eBay under the userid FRPGames), and several other stores (of which GK is the only noteworthy one, IMO).

More importantly, what will you see at MWE? iTV? The video iPod? iPhone? iD&D? :p
Make sure you hit Chinatown too. Good food. Some great Thai restaurants as well by the Mascone.
