Fire shield-do you need to hit the person or just attack

if you attack a person with fire shield on do you take damage if you miss? Do you need to hit their touch AC? What if a person fumbles alll together missing you entirely do they still take 1d6 +1 per level?

You need to "strike" a person with fire shield in order to take damage. Merely "hitting" their touch AC is insufficient unless you are making a touch attack. Someone who misses you takes no damage.

No.

Do you need to hit their touch AC?

Nope.

What if a person fumbles alll together missing you entirely do they still take 1d6 +1 per level?

Nope.

While the first line of the spell indicates only that creatures attacking you take damage, when you factor in the second line of the spell "Any creature striking you with its body or a handheld weapon ...", it indicates that a successful attack is required, not just an attempted attack.

I thought the second line was just to clarify that if your struck it does not hamper the attackers to hit with any penalties, you are not granted any ac bonus and you are attacked and receive damage as normal. The first sentence I thought was pretty clear, and would have to be ignored IMO to take your positions as a strike being necessary.

I'm not sure how you got that impression, since the spell mentions nothing about attack penalties or ac bonuses, in any of the sentences.

Then what was the point of you asking the question?

what if you use a touch spell of someone protected by a fire shield? you said earlier hitting a touch ac isnt enough so can one avoid the fire defence this way?
i'm inclined to say no, you would be hit but this is getting a little inconsistent.

If you actually hit him, then you take damage. If you use a touch spell and hit his touch AC, then you are actually hitting him.

My "no" response to hitting the touch AC was assuming the full question was "What if I make a normal attack, and roll high enough to hit his touch AC but not to hit his normal AC?"
