Familiar's Alertness count toward prestige class?

Didn't we just have this question? It was pretty much a unanimous NO. Since your familiar has to be within a certain distance to grant the benefit, it can't really count towards Prc qualifications (excluding a new Tapeworm familar or some such).

You gain the Alertness feat if you have a familiar within a certain distance.

If you have the Alertness feat for whatever your DM has decided is long enough then you qualify for the prestige class.

No different than the virtual two weapon fighting feats of a Ranger, he can use these to qualify for a prestige class if he hasn't worn heavy armor for some DM determined amount of time.

Technically you're right. If your DM is lenient enough, you might conceivably use familiar-based Alertness to qualify for a PrC.

However, if your familiar ever went outside arm's reach, or got killed, or you otherwise lost benefit of the virtual feat, you would instantly lose all benefits of the class.

virtual feats

as long as your Familiar is within in 5 feat you have the "virtual feat" alertness and it will allow you to qualify for special PrC notably devoted defender. if at any time you loose the benefit of your familiar you loose that feat and the pre-reqs for the class and then all fo the class special abilitys the ony thing you retain are the BAB and saves form the class no special abilities, no enhanced AC anything untill you regain tehat virtual feat (get back within 5 ft of your familiar)

if a DMis feeling particualy nasty they can rule that the familiar must be within Line of sight, and be outside of any pockets /familiar pouches/ cages etc they or the PC dosnt have the alertness "Virtual Feat"

the penalties for this are easily taken with in the game by making the familiar make all of its own saves, attacking the familiar etc

Yes, it allows you to qualify for a prestige class.

There really is no doubt about it, since the PHB states that you gain the feat when the familiar is within arms reach.

However, you lose all the special benefits of the prestige class whenever your familiar is out of arm's reach. (Basically whenever the familiar is not in your square.)

People should earn their PrCs, even the elf mages.

So just take Alertness, like everyone else who ends up taking Toughness and Dodge for their PrCs.

Besides, although it works for balance reasons to deny the harper mage his special abilities when the familiar leaves, it does not work well for the story.
