Expeditious Retreat and Fly ...

Hi all,

Does anyone know if these two spells stack, or not? That is - fly gives you 90' movement while flying, and expeditious retreat doubles your movement. I know that monks and Boots of Springing and Striding only doubles their base 50' movement (as the rest is supernatural, and the boots don't do that).

However, I don't see any reason the two can't stack - or is it an "either or" situation?

Thanks,

Uh oh...

Before anyone answers, I'll do the obligatory 'Boots of Striding and SPringing stack!'

Then, watch as I turn around and go 'The spell says 'Expeditious *Retreat*' and 'It's not natural movement.'

Now, to let other people take the arguement, I shall back off. :)

Btw, IMO, I have no problem with it.

Really? What kind of silly rule is that?

Well, along the same lines, flying movement would probably NOT be increased by the spell.

It's in the latest D&D FAQ.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

I don't know if flying would be considered unnatural movement.

Consider an awakened eagle, who flies 80 ft. Imagine it can cast expeditious retreat. I assume, then, that it would double the 80 ft movement. The only reason that the movement is so high is because it's flying, and not based on the ground.

I would assume that the fly spell does something similar. The unnatural (or spel-llike) effect is putting you and keeping you in the air, not in how fast you move while flying.

Any thoughts?

The one that says "Generally, similar magical effects do not stack.", and part of the monk's increased speed is magical.

Really, I think that sucks. I have no problems with allowing speeds to stack.

Fine, Go ahead, be a fast little mofo. That just means you're *aching* for a dispel. :)

This exact situation is just about to pop up in a campaign I'm playing.

We broke in the middle of combat (getting too late). My turn's up next. I'll read my scroll of expeditious retreat, because the sorceror we're chasing is running away (and is hasted). I already know he can cast fly, which is why I've got a potion of fly ready.

So I know, that in a few rounds, he might try to fly to get away from me. I'll already have expeditious retreat cast (don't want to quaff fly first, as he might not think of flying underground), and the fly will be quaffed soon after that.

That's why I gots to know :D
