With my core group of gamers slowly spreading themselves to the four corners of the earth, I've decided to attempt to run a play-by-wiki game.
The idea is that it will be a mish-mosh of 4th ed, Pathfinder's Kingmaker, and whatever else makes sense for the wiki environment. In general, online, the game will mostly be exploration, city/world building, and a mix of wiki-style single and mass combat encounters. In the rare instances when people are all back in town, things will devolve into straight 4th ed.
I've never really played in a play by mail/email/wiki game before, but I can imagine where most of the problems probably are.
We'll have some kind of loose "try to write at least X things a week" rule. In a situation where the game is stuck in limbo because we're waiting for someone to get around to posting, they'll become an NPC till they come back.
I can't imagine that any encounter will ever be a turn by turn exchange for long. I'm hoping that we'll find a "these are the things that I want to do/have happen, and these are the contingencies I want in place till you tell me otherwise" rhythm easily enough.
For die rolls I'm going to come up with some kind of algorithm that takes the players last post or declaration of action and turns it into a number. I know that it will effectively be the same as just using a die roller, but I think that I, and my players will probably like that false feeling of control.
But. I don't know where to start. Is there a play-by wiki setup somewhere that people would suggest? Are there other unforeseen problems and pitfalls I should know about?
