Evard's Background

The previews of Heroes of Shadow have talked a lot about the wizard Evard. This is perhaps the most I've heard that name in a while.

Now, Evard is famous for his spell, Evard's Black Tentacles. What I'm wondering is, what is his background before that? Was he a Greyhawk NPC? Or was he just a name?

Curious minds want to know.

I believe Evard was a Non-Player character, at least Gygax mentions him as such in Dragon #68

Unless I've missed something, all that Evard lore is post-2000 - so not necessarily canonical in classical Greyhawk games. (There is a reference to Evard in Dragon 82, but it is nothing but a name and the Black Tentacle's spell - there is no lore in the article in question.)

Apparently, Evard was a name created by Gary Gygax and doesn't seem to have a character history attached.
