Any ideas on this? Of course, pre-Tolkien Elves live in caves underground...where if you follow them there, it seems like you'll be celebrating with them for a night or two, then walk out of there and its a hundred years later

They move to evergreen trees, you silly! :p

Actually, they climb ontop coconuts and migrate, hitch-hiked by swallows.

evergreens?! DOH! (is that a european coconut or an african coconut?)

I'm still perplexed about how Elves live--gathering nuts and berries? I just can't imagine elven peasants farming.

Well, I know Tolkien elves (some if not all, I only have like a +6 in my Knowledge (Tolkien Lore) Skill, my 3 year old has a higher score than me) are immune to cold, so it doesn't bother them. Hence legolas isn't wearing any furs on Caradras.

As for D&D elves, they could possibly use spells to keep the snow away, or hire some dwarves (or other lower life forms) to shovel the snow away.

It could be thier groves are so thick, that snow doesn't penetrate the trees.

I also heard a rumor that a certain political party in Qualinesti was looking into purchasing a remarkable Gnomish invention called the Very Large and Elongated Steam Powered Device cabaple of moving large quantities of liquids in the frozen state however not very capable of moving liquids in the liquid state as was the original intention of the mechanism's design however it is in commitee (or Snow Plow for short; it was originally designed to move mud pudles and small ponds out of the way, but during testing it snowed over, and the gnomes were able to find a different tactical application for the device. Alas the design is flawed however in that the machine can only move forward, and not stop, and so it is planned to bring the device to commitee if they can ever catch up to the gnome inventor driving it).

hope i could help :)

Tolkien Elves (at least the ones in The Hobbit) lived underground, also.

Geoff.

What difference does the season make? They make their houses in trees, year round.

As for food, they use a DC:10 Survival task to obtain food, some farm, and others hunt. Managing a grove of fruit- or nut-bearing trees is also considered "farming", as are managing berry bushes, mushroom beds, etc. Many Elves probably get all the food they need from their trees, and save the excess for the winter.

The DM of a campaign has several options.
- They live in evergreens.
- They stay right there and have a better view.
- Their forest is magical and summer year-round.
