In the thread on elven cities in General Discussion (found here), there was some discussion of how the elves might use magic to make their buildings. What follows is my own solution, based losely upon the 2e Construction spell found in Elves of Evermeet. Determining the overall cost of casting the spell relies pretty heavily on calculations to be made using the Stronghold Builders Guidebook, so apologies in advance if that proves unhelpful.
Construction
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 6
Components: V,S,F,M
Casting Time: 8 hours
Range: Close (25 feet + 5 feet/2 levels)
Area: up to 1 stronghold space (aprox. 20’x20’x10’)
Duration: Permanent
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
By means of this spell, the caster conjures forth a structure where none existed before. This structure must be composed of either living wood or unworked stone. Stone may be drawn forth from any suitably large body of subsurface rock, so long as it lies within the spell's range.
Construction creates only internal and external walls. Furnishings and most forms of detail work (painting, carving, etc.) must be provided separately.
Focus: An ornately carved, emerald-tipped stave worth at least 5000 gp.
Material Component: A tiny scale model replica of the space to be constructed. The fineness of this model (and its associated cost) varies with the amount and type of material to be worked, as follows:
Wall, Stone or Living Wood: 55 gp per 1 in thickness per stronghold space (ss), or 5 gp per 10’ x 10’ x 1 inch section of freestanding wall.
Stone: below ground: 2000 gp per stronghold space for total excavation, down to as little as 35 gp per ss for minor alterations to a pre-existing cavern.
Note: When using multiple castings of this spell to create a structure larger than 1 ss, use the cost of the total structure to determine the price of the material component (which will be expended piece by piece as the structure takes shape). Refer to table 2-4 in the Stronghold Builder's Guide when determining the ratio of internal walls to external.
