D&D 5E Elemental symbols connect together? (PotA)

I apologize if this has been discussed before -- I did a google search of the forum and elsewhere but didn't uncover anything. I spotted this interesting line in PotA, during the initial cult section:

Throughout the adventure, characters have ample opportunity to see the symbol associated with each of the four cults. They could figure out how the four symbols connect to form a fifth symbol: that of the Elder Elemental Eye.

I assume this means that if you rearrange the 4 cult symbols just so, you get the elemental eye symbol. Which is really cool if true, but...I keep looking at the symbols and I'm not seeing how it works. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Here are the 4 symbols plus the version of the elemental eye symbol depicted 2 pages later:

Perhaps its the edges implying an inverted step ziggurat, which has been the classic symbol for Tharizdun for a while.

I dont think you can combine them to make the actual symbol, more inference as stated above.

So I tried just directly overlaying all 4 symbols, using the ones found in the corners of Mike Schley's maps. Here's the result. I can't say it looks like any of the symbols depicted in the book, nor any of the ones I see on Google for Ghaunadaur or Tharizdun. Kinda looks like the symbol of Gruumsh though!

Well, looking at it, I presume what they're going for is this (slightly edited to emphasize the "eye" shape):

I dunno. That's what I saw as soon as I looked at the image itself. "Oh, it's like an eye with a vertical-slit iris."

Yeah, what I keep thinking they mean from the quoted bit from the book is that if you arrange the 4 main symbols in some fashion (without the little wedge blocks that particular image puts them in), you get that eye symbol, or at least something eye-like...

Maybe I should tweet at Mearls and see if he knows what they were going for there.
