D&D 5E Eberron Campaign

So a few weeks ago in AL we played ELW00 I think it was called "What's Past is Prologue" or something close to that. I was not real impressed with the session. I don't know if it was the writing or the GM. But our group found it incredibly difficult to know what was going on. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but the 'intended path' we had all immediately dismissed as impossible because of the situation described. We were just going to give ourselves up to the authorities until the DM explained what was supposed to happen.

However, that adventure is supposed to lead into an Eberron campaign and a friend of mine was absolutely enthralled with the old Eberron setting. So I was going to get him the book(s) for his home game. We've looked at a few game shops and can't find any 5thEd Eberron campaign setting or modules. Is it out of print? Called something else? What are we missing?

Thanks.

There are no printed 5th edition Eberron books. The only official one is the Wayfarer's Guide to Eberron, which is available as pdf on the dmsguild.com for $20 I think it was. It's all playtest material, and a number of things within that can be found in 3 of the last 4 Unearthed Arcanas for free.

There are also two Eberron adventures on the DMSGuild, both written by Keith Baker himself. They are called "Curtain Call" and "Trust No One."

Not being familiar with Eberron myself, what books pre-5e are worth getting?

Ebay/Amazon are great sources for out of print stuff if you want a paper copy (and I've purchased a ton in the last three years) and DMsGuild is great for PDFs (and I've purchased a ton in the last three years). By this point, almost everything not 5e is available.

With Eberron getting 5e support it might be worth it to look back at old stuff.

I still run all my Eberron games with the 3.5 Eberron Campaign Setting. I don't find that I really need anything more than that for most games. It's got enough info to get the flavor of things, but not so much that it becomes bloated and bogged down with detail.

Honestly, between that and the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron PDF they brought out a while back, that's most of what you need for an Eberron game. What's missing is an Artificer class (they have one in Unearthed Arcana, though), and kalashtar/psionics. Again though, they have the Mystic class as an Unearthed Arcana class. The Eberron5E website has a bunch of cool homebrew, including a kalashtar race.

If you are looking for good Eberron books pre-5e, I would suggest the following:

Eberron Campaign Setting
Player's Guide to Eberron
Magic of Eberron

I enjoyed the Races of Eberron from 3rd edition, though it wasn't billed as an Eberron book (had the brown cover that generic player-oriented books had, instead of the unique cover that Eberron books had). Had a lot of racial feats and other things for the various races. It was similar to the Races of books (dragons, stone, the wild, etc).

What Hawk Diesel said is a great starting point as well.

Another great book is the 3.5 Sharn supplement. It is a detailed look at the huge magical and cosmopolitan city in Eberron.

But actually the best introduction to Eberron is "Adventurer's Guide to Eberron," a slim pdf/book produced early in 3.5 that was full of pictures and captions. It skimmed through the whole world and gave an exciting glimpse of all the weirdness without very much text to slog through.

That said, the new DMs Guild pdf "Wayfarer's Guide to Eberron" ahs the 5E crunch you need.

There's a new adventure each Friday on dmsguild.

Murder in Skyway was not great, but Boromar Ball feels way more Eberron-y (?) to me, next up for my group.

So far, they've been super short (10 pages or so of actual adventure, the rest AL stuff and usual Eberron recycled art) and are pretty much one session each.

US $5 a pop is pretty pricy for each one though... 11 planned in series if memory serves so $$$.

I recommend the original Eberron adventure path that was published for v3.5 when the setting first came out. It is sometimes known as The Forgotten Forge adventure, as it starts with that adventure in the original Eberron Campaign Setting book.

The remaining list for that adventure includes:
Shadows of the Last War
Whispers of the Vampire's Blade
Grasp of the Emerald Claw

For books, I prefer the following for reference material and feel of Eberron (all DnD 3.5):
Eberron Campaign Setting
Sharn: City of Intrigue
Five Nations
Player's Guide to Eberron

Of course for any of this material, you would have to convert from DnD 3.5 to v5. With the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron and the Unearthed Arcana pdfs coming out, that task should be easier than it would have been without the new rules.

All of these (books and adventures) should be available as pdfs in DM's Guild/DriveThruRPG, or you can try Ebay if you really prefer hard copies.
