Dwarven Waraxe - 1 or 2 handed?

War Golem

First Post
Hey folks,

The description of this weapon isn't completely clear to me. Is it saying that you need to take EWP feat to use it at all, or to use it one-handed (if you are a medium size creature)?

Thanks,

If you have all martial weapons you can weld it in two hands. If you have it as an EWP, you can weld it in one hand. It's exactly like the Bastard sword in that regards.

But the dwarven war-axe is considered a medium-sized martial weapon (when used 2-handed)... couldnt a small character use it with 2-hands anyways without the feat?

Wrong. Without the feat it's a large martial weapon. With the feat an exotic medium sized weapon. Kinda.

From the description list in the PHB under Dwarven Waraxe and Bastard Sword I would infer that a Gnome/Halfling would be able to wield either weapon in two hands with an Exotic Wepaon Proficiency but would never be able to wield the weapon in one hand without the use of the S&F Monkey Grip feat and a -4 attack mod. Of course it does not specifically state this anywhere. I am working under inferred logic that these weapons' size categories are technically being treated as [medium*1.5]

Yes, but attacks would be at a -4 penalty, since it's an exotic weapon.
