DVDs for PC gaming (Or holy crap...PC games are getting big!)

Just wondering but..

For the past year or so, Ive mostly been a console guy..except for the occasional MMO, there hasnt been alot thats interested me. But with finally upgrading my computer and the new releases Im getting back into it.

But wow..is it me or are games getting bigger? MMOs and rpgs have been mult disc games in the past, but it seems to be spreading. Star Wars Battlefront 3 discs...Rome Total War 3 discs.

I guess I shouldnt be surprised that games are so big, after all they are getting more detailed and technically sophisticated. But why no DVD games? More storage, faster access.

Think the industry will make a switch? Should they? Would it help the "flagging" PC gaming market?

There are DVD games, they just aren't prevalent right now. I saw a gaming magazine featuring a DVD rather than a CD a while ago, and packed it with lots of demos and at least one full game. Too bad I don't have a DVD-ROM in my PC right now.

The World of Warcraft Collector's Edition will include copies of the game both in CD-ROM and DVD-ROM format. Hopefully this will be the start of a trend, as it gets tiring swapping 3-5 discs while installing a computer game.

And right here we have the reason why more games aren't released on dvd. Most people just don't have dvd drives, despite how cheap they are now.

It will take big companies like Dell and Gateway including a dvd drive in every pc they sell or a software release (HL2, the next Win) being dvd only to get people to upgrade.

But I think its sort of a chicken and the egg thing, a situation similar to the introduction of color tv or now HDTV. Its a good thing, but the industry isnt adapting to it because the user base is small. The user base is small because theres no overwhelming advantage (apart from eliminating disc swapping and faster access maybe) to do so. So the industry doesnt budge, and neither do the customers.

Games are being released-Sims 2 has a DVD version. But until a game company releases a game to take advantage of the format PC gaming will still be behind the consoles in one aspect of technology.

Im hearing Everquest II is 10 discs.is Myst IV dvd only? Maybe the change is coming....

For Everquest 2 you will have the choice between 7-9 CD's or 2 DVD's.......

I bought the DVD version of Sims 2 for my wife and the DVD version of Far Cry for myself.

I prefer the DVD versions now, hopefully they will be the same price or cheaper in the future. Sims 2 DVD version was the same price as the normal version at least.

It was all that space for Tim Curry's voice! "Cabrit sans Cor!"

What a great game.

It means "Don't eat the chili"!!

Best moment of game

Narrator: "Magic wishing stone, da tag says 'rub it and make a wish'"
GK: "Funny, I say the same thing to women"

I think Micheal Dorn and Mark Hamil also did voices for that game.
