Dungeon Tiles + dry-erase markers = bad idea?

I'm considering getting some of the WotC Dungeon Tiles (I saw some at a friends' house and was very impressed), but I'm curious if you can use a dry-erase marker on them and be able to wipe the tiles off afterwards.

Black wipes off, red stains. It was either blue or green that also leaves faint stains, someone else will be able to tell you.

I'd suggest laying a overhead projector sheet over the top of the tiles if you really want to write on them. I certainly won't be writing directly on to mine.

Seriously, though, if you're going to go as far as investing in large-ish clear plastic overlays, why not skip the tiles altogether and simply go with a Battlemat?

Are you sure you aren't thinking about wet erase markers, not dry?

Dry erase markers generally only work on whiteboards, in my experience. They seem to have permanently stained my wet-erase battlemat in the 'testing' square. :( That's too bad, because I bought the 16-pack of dry erase markers with all kinds of colors.

That said, I haven't tried either wet erase or dry erase on Dungeon Tiles.

Oh, I've got a set of Tact-Tiles and a Steel Sqwire Flip-Mat, but I want to know if I can draw rubble on my Dungeon Tiles(just ordered my first set from Amazon!) without permanently altering them.

I wouldn't. I tried it with wet erase, and it didn't completely come off. Black worked OK, but it still left a faded residual mark. Red doesn't come out at all. It really diminishes the value if it doesn't come off so well. I'm tempted to try spraying Scotchgard on them to see if that works.

So that you can get the look and ease of use of the Dungeon Tiles, still have the utility to mark things on them without worrying about whether you won't be able to get them off. The plastic overhead sheets come in A4 size and aren't that expensive to buy. You can reuse them over and over again so it shouldn't cost you that much.
