Drinking a potion and AoO?

First Post
If a character A drinks a potion while engaged in melee with character B, then character B gets to make an attack of opportunity.

Now my question is...
If character B's attack of opportunity is a successful hit, does character A actually consume the potion? Does the potion drop to the ground and break? What are the official rules handling this situation?

In general, there are no automatic side effects of provoking an AoO other than the AoO itself. So, yes, A does get to drink the potion.

Note that extremely savvy combatants sometimes use the AoO for things other than attacking for damage. Grappling or tripping are the most common options, but attacking a weapon or attacking an object are viable options as well.

Not necessarily.

"Using a potion or oil provokes attacks of opportunity. A successful attack (including grappling attacks) against the character forces a Concentration check (as with casting a spell). If the character fails this check, he or she cannot drink the potion. An attacker may direct the attack of opportunity against the potion or oil container rather than against the character. A successful attack on the potion can destroy the container. "

Me too. Often from Hypersmurf.

I must say that that is right up there near the top of the list for "poor rules placement". I hope the 3.5 PHB will put that rule in the AoO section under COMBAT rather than having it in the section on Potions in the DMG.

I didn't know either. Just out of curiosity, which DC? I guess something simple like 10 + damage.
