D&D 5E Doing one Downtime Activity for an entire year...

Let's say your character has a year of downtime, but they have to commit to one single Downtime Activity for the entire year.

Using only Downtime Activities from sourcebooks, what would be some fun, effective, or zany results of doing the same Downtime Activity for an entire year?

Crafting. In a year I could make a set of full plate armor and basically whatever weapons I want, while maintaining a comfortable lifestyle at no out-of-pocket cost. Anything I don’t need I can sell and break even on the cost of materials.

Now, if we’re talking Xanathar’s Guide downtime rules that might be a different story. I’d have to look at those more closely.

I think everyone went with Netflix, last year. ;)

In previous editions, I would have said spell research. I'm a little non-plussed to discover it's not a default downtime activity in 5E.

Barring that, 52 weeks of mundane research would still give my illusionist a pretty brutal advantage in future adventures.

I would think Training would be the most useful, gaining a language or tool proficiency (although IRL I'd choose carousing ;) ). If permitted, I'd go with purchasing a magic item. You could use the time to get a powerful magic item, which isn't normally an option due to the length of downtime.

This is done relatively often in my campaigns. Sometimes, 3 or 4 years will pass between adventures. And still at high level, I keep using my barony/temple/guild/keep/school/monastery rules so characters haves something to do beside "adventuring". So only one year? Lots of possibilities. In my all elven campaign (1ed) dozens or even hundreds of years could pass. Downtime is precious and can lead to further adventures. Afterall, what better reason to go out and adventure than I have no more gold, I spent it all in parties and booze!
