The spell blocks all magical impediements and non-solid mundane ones. Grappling is a solid mundane impediement. As such, a Ring of Free Action does not prevent Grappling.

However, if someone were to try to cast a spell on you that grapples you, that spell would fail (but a summoned creature capable of attacking or grappling you would not be prevented from grappling you).

thank you much..that helped out allot..i saw the spell here:

Freedom of Movement

Abjuration
Level: Clr 4, Drd 4, Luck 4, Pal 4, Rgr 4
Components: V, S, M, DF
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Personal or touch
Target: The character or creature touched
Duration: 10 minutes/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No or Yes (harmless)

This spell enables the character or the creature the character touches to move and attack normally for the duration of the spell, even under the influence of magic that usually impedes movement.

The spell also allows a character to move and attack normally while underwater, even with cutting weapons and with bludgeoning weapons provided that the weapon is wielded in the hand rather than hurled. The freedom of movement spell does not, however, allow water breathing.

so now the item only prevents MAGICAL and not physical nature spells...

Well, actually no.

As written, the ring protects against anything that impedes your movement. Note the use of the word "even". a brick wall doesn't count since you can still move, ie: wave your arms. Note that this is a poorly written spell. About as bad as it was in 2e.

A grapple is tricker. You can't phase through solids since the spell doesn't say that you can, so I rule it one of two ways:

You can spend an action next round and automatically succeed at your grapple check to escape.

Or you are still grappled, but you don't face any penalties in terms of casting spells or using a small weapon. (since you can move freely you can use your longsword against something that is grappling you.)

I use the 2nd ruling.

I rule that it doesn't prevent anyone from attacking as grappling does not prevent you from attacking with light weapons nor does it prevent you from moving.

I ruled:

1. You can be grappled as grappling does not prevent you from moving nor attackin per the SRD ( i read it and had a discussion with one of my players on it..nice and long!)

2. Anything that impedes you from moving either by mundane means (water, gasses, etc.) or by magical means (spells, spell like abilities, spells cast upon those that then use them, etc.) will not affect the user.
