D&D 5E Does 1d4 damage from basic poison (100gp) cause poison condition?

The Basic Poison is 100 gp for three applications, and it's the only poison in the PHB as far as I know.

A creature hit by a poisoned weapon or ammo makes a DC 10 constitution check or suffers 1d4 damage.

My question is, is the creature then poisoned as per the condition in the appendix? If so, for how long?

I'm thinking for the same number of rounds as hit points lost, but maybe only if the constitution check is failed by 5 or more.

Thoughts?

It doesn't say that it does so I'd say no. It should say specifically that it inflicts the poisonous condition and for how long, like the description of the pseudodragon's sting.

I expect we will see more poisons in the DMG that do inflict the poisoned condition, but it's possible that it's just from certain monsters. Note that not all poisonous monsters inflict the poisonous condition either, poisonous snakes do not.

Thanks. Interestingly, the pseudodragon poison has a small chance of rendering the target unconscious, on a saving throw of 6 or less vs DC 11.

I think I'll do something similar and house rule that if the saving throw vs basic poison is 5 or less (on the DC 10 con check) that the target is poisoned for 10 minutes per point of damage inflicted. Otherwise it's a very expensive 33gp for just an extra 1d4 damage with no real poison vibe happening.

Hiya.

It's called Poison. So, uh, yeah...it's poison (with all the conditions that implies). How long? *shrug* Ask your DM. Chances are he'll go with "10 rounds or until you make the DC10 save" (the description of Poison, Basic says it is potent for 1 minute).

How about making it until healed or a Short Rest? Or a Long Rest? Or make a saving throw every round to throw off the condition.

No, the basic poison, as written, does not inflict the poisoned condition. You can look at the Otyugh for an example of something applying the poisoned condition. Interestingly, the poisoned condition is also a stand in for the diseased condition. There is nothing stopping you from making your own poisons using the monsters as examples. But for the most part, a poison that inflicts the poisoned condition is pretty boring. You could go look at the 3.5 SRD and get some decent ideas for poisons.

This is a strange part of the rules for me as one of my player's wants to use poisons but there's no real guidance. 100g for a one time 1d4 damage? Doesn't seem right. 20 days to brew one potion? Seems weird too.

I expect we will see more about poisons in the DMG, and the MM. I hope we see poisons that induce the poisoned condition, cause damage round after round, induce blindness, or maybe some other conditions.
And no, taking poison damage does not mean acquiring the poisoned condition, any more than being hit by a sword in 4E meant that you acquired the bloodied condition.
