Do you require Dwarves to spend an Exotic Weapon feat to use the Dwarven Waraxe?

They way I understand the rules, a Dwarf must take an exotic weapon feat to use the dwarven waraxe. This is what the 'standard dwarf fighter package' indicates in the PHB.

Isn't that like saying a Kantana would be exotic to a Japanese Samurai?

Personally, I assume that any character should have automatic proficiency in a weapon/armor whose origin is the culture of the PC. E.g. Dwarves and dwarven waraxes, Elves--Longbow/longsword, etc. The same with humans with a particular backround that may allow them to be familiar with 'exotic weapons.

It's rather important for a dwarf, actually, since it saves a feat if the dwarf wants to use the dwarven waraxe.

Anyone agree?

Don't agree. From a gaming standpoint, dwarves already get a ton of racial bonuses. To give them a free feat as well would be too much.

Plus, do Dwarven Wizards get this feat as well?

I do agree that is a concern. But can't a Dwarf get around that anyway by choosing a another weapon?

Well, of course not. But I don't plan on seeing many Dwarf wizards in my campaign. In any case, that would be the same as the difference between a human fighter and wizard.

A katana was a special weapon, you just didn't go swinging it around like a bat, so YES a samari would have to take exotic weapon to use such a weapon

Also a dwarf has to take exotic to use a Dwarven War Axe ONE HANDED. Your dwarven fighter could swing that bad boy around two handed with out any problems.

But you asked this question in the rules forum, so by the rules you need to take exotic weapon feat, and IMHO it is not wasted feat, to use a dwarven war axe.

But in your game you want to let dwarves use the war axe without a feat go right ahead.

Ok, here's how it works. All the people you mentioned can use the weapons you want them to. The elves get it as a racial ability, the dwarves and samarai are able to use the waraxe and the katana (which is simply a masterwork bastard sword) two-handed as martial weapons. Its only when used one handed that they need the feat. This is with the caveat that the dwarf and samarai are warriors of some sort. But you already had that assumption, seeing as you disallowed the dwarven wizard.

So this is how a dwarven warrior would look: two-handed 1-10

+ str bonus * 1.5, martial. One handed 1-10 + str bonus exotic, allows use of shield, or another weapon, with further feats.

Now where this breaks down is the double weapons, urgosh, orchish double axe, dire flail etc. The balance of these weapons take special training to use appropiately.

Any way sorry for the long post and hope this helps

OK, now I see. Makes a bit more sense.

Samuris get Martial profeciency in the Katana. It would take an exotic weapons feat to use the Katana one-handed.

Just like the Katana, Dwarven fighters are proficient martially with the war axe

Yes.

They can stick to Battle Axe if that is a problem.

Always saw Longsword vs Bastard Sword as similar to Battle Axe vs Waraxe.

by the same reasoning of dwarves getting a free proficiency with the dwarven war axe wouldn't half-orcs get a free proficiency with the orc double axe?

after arguing with my half orc barbarian player i decided if they really wanted the weapon they'd have to take a feat for it.
