D&D 5E Different sizes of elementals in 5E?

Just noticed that 5E MM includes only Large elementals.

Have different sizes of elementals been included anywhere else in 5E? Maybe in Princes of the Apocalypse?

We're converting a PF campaign over to 5E, and I have a magic item that lets me summon Medium fire elementals.

They have Elemental Myrmidons that are medium, but they are more powerful than the regular Elementals (CR 7 instead of 5, weapons count as magic in terms of damage resistance/immunity, and speak a language of the summoners choice). Galeb Duhr, Gargoyles, Invisible Stalkers, Fire Snakes, and Xorn are also medium elemental creatures. Gargoyles and Fire Snakes are the only ones weaker than regular Elementals, though....

It would probably be easiest to let the object give you the conjure minor elementals spell, or pick a CR for medium elementals (3 or 4) and use the DMG to figure out their damage and hit points. I think (but am not sure) that unless the item is sentient, using it for a concentration spell requires your concentration.

The Summon/Conjure Elemental refers to the creature type, not the creature name. Which is why the spells also have CR limits. Thus "small elemental" == "mephit".

While you are correct, we used to have actual varying sizes of the "base" elementals, and I think the OP is trying to recreate that.

I just ran an old Dungeon adventure last week that called for some Small earth elementals. I found it easy enough to take the Large size elemental in the MM and rejig it to be Small using the guidelines in the DMG. The main thing is just to reduce the hit die size to a d6. This is what I came up with:

SMALL EARTH ELEMENTAL
Small elemental, neutral
Armor Class 15 (natural armor)
Hit Points 27 (6d6 + 6)
Speed 20 ft., burrow 20 ft.
STR 17 DEX 8 CON 13 INT 4 WIS 10 CHA 5
Damage Vulnerabilities thunder
Damage Resistances bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing
from nonmagical weapon attacks
Damage Immunities poison
Condition Immunities exhaustion, paralyzed, petrified, poisoned, unconscious
Senses darkvision 60 ft., tremorsense 60 ft., passive Perception 10
Languages Terran
Challenge 1 (200 XP)

Earth Glide.
Siege Monster.

ACTIONS
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) bludgeoning dmg.

I hope in any potential MM2 we get different sized elementals - tiny elementals that can be used as familiars, or downright huge elementals that can threaten an entire large settlement...
