Okay, here's the Demon Prince Template. I'll create Pazuzu, Baphomet, and Azazel with this template this week. Again, constructive criticism is appreciated.
Creating a Demon Prince
"Demon Prince" is a template that can be added to any Demon Lord-template creature, a Demon or Tanar'ri (particularly Nalfeshnee, Marilith, and Balor), Chaotic evil Infernal, or non-Lawful Outsider with at least 30 HD or 35 ECL. On rare occasions (DM discretion), a being of such depraved evil and ties to the nihilism of The Abyss will change into a Demon Prince. Likewise, on rare occasions, a Demiurge or even a god will bless (or curse, depending on one's outlook) a mortal being with this status. In both cases, such an "ascension" requires that the mortal have at least 30 class levels.
To most unfamiliar with the "intricacies" (or lack thereof) in The Abyss, it is commonly assumed that the Demon Princes are the mightiest of the Demons that infest that wretched plane. Wielding tremendous power, the Demon Princes war against everything, from each other, to the gods, to mortals, to Creation itself, bent on tearing down every and anything they come across. Yet, despite this power, which allows them to far surpass lesser Demons, including Demon Lords, Demon Princes are inferior in virtually every way to the true masters of The Abyss, the Demiurge.
For centuries, scholars have wondered about the politics that exist in The Abyss. Most scholars and those who like to consider themselves familiar with the Outer Planes, tend to try to create an intricate hierarchy for the masters of The Abyss similar to that maintained by their Lawful Evil counterparts in The Nine Hells of Baator. Many grimoires and bestiaries tell of how five or six Demon Lords serve a Demon Prince, who in turn is joined by two other Demon Princes under the control of a Demiurge. They discuss battalions and troops, assigning military concepts to the various Demonic forces. However simpler this concept sounds, however more sensible it becomes for mortals on the Prime, these ideas simply do not capture the truth of the "hierarchies" of The Abyss. Unlike the Lords of the Nine, Arch-Devils, and Dukes of Hell, who exist are clearly stratified along power-lines based upon might, wit, and official station, the Demon Lords, Demon Princes, and Demiurges are muddily stratified along power-lines alone. To be sure, there are Demon Princes who have attained their power through wit and charm (Pazuzu comes to mind), and there is at least one Demiurge known for his significant intellect (Graz'zt). But, in the end, position and station in The Abyss is based upon physical power and the ability to successfully use it against enemies and allies. Loyalty does not exist in The Abyss, nor does the illusion of loyalty (as in the Nine Hells). A Demon Prince bows before a Demiurge because the Demiurge forces it to do so or suffer immediate destruction. Likewise, Demon Princes grind Demon Lords and lesser Demons beneath their heels or destroy them. Such is the hierarchy of The Abyss.
So, what truly sets a Demon Prince apart from a Demon Lord or a Demiurge? In the case of the Demon Lords, who typically compete over the control of a single layer, most Demon Princes have complete control over a layer of The Abyss. Additionally, Demon Princes are truly divine beings. Many are worshipped or placated by lesser beings and the physical presence of a few is such that very dedicated servants even wield some form of divine power. Finally, Demon Princes are so "evolved" that they tend to no longer resemble the base creature from which they sprang; all are physically warped and wholly unique. Yet, despite this tremendous power, the Demon Princes are still weaker than the Demiurge, who rival the gods in power.
No one knows how many Demon Princes exist. Common sense would suggest that there are an infinite number of these monsters, since there are an infinite number of Demons. However, no one knows for certain. It is known that these beings are unpredictable, so it is unlikely that any two will share similar goals. Most are opposed to the machinations of every other being, including rival Demon Princes, Demiurge, and the gods.
Demon Princes are the masters of death, destruction, acts of violence and passion, and virtually every other rash and evil act in the Cosmos. They are the personification of Chaotic Evil, only lacking the might of the Demiurge to grant them ultimate power.
The base creature's type changes to that of Demon. The Demon Prince uses all the base creature's statistics and special abilities except as noted here:
HD: A Demon Prince receives the maximum hit point per die.
Speed: The base speed is increased by 10 to all modes of movement. There is a 100% chance that the Demon Lord will gain an additional mode of movement and a 30% chance it will gain two additional modes of movement. In any case, the ability to Fly is always at least double that of the base movement (perfect), and other modes are equal to the base mode.
AC: If the base creature or Demon Lord already has a natural armor bonus, this remains the same and the Demon Prince gains a profane bonus of +6 and a deflection bonus equal to its Charisma modifier to its AC. If the base creature does not have an inherent natural armor class, it gains natural armor of +13, a profane bonus of +6, and a deflection bonus equal to its Charisma bonus.
Spell-like Abilities or Psionics: Demon Princes retain the special attacks of the base creature unless such attacks had the Good descriptor. In this case, the special attack with the Good descriptor is replaced with the Evil version. Thus, if a Solar becomes a Demon Prince, it loses the spell-like ability holy smite, replacing it with unholy blight. In the case of Healing spells, such abilities are replaced with Necromantic spells of the appropriate type. If there is no clear opposite, the Demon Prince retains the ability. The caster level for such abilities is always the Demon Prince's HD + 6. As beings of chaos and destruction, Demon Princes often do not share many of the same spells. Thus, in addition to the spells listed below, Demon Prince also gain access to spell levels from which they may supplement their spell selection. As a general rule, Demon Prince usually do not have access to spells that heal, return life to, or otherwise benefit another being. Additionally, Demon Princes never have access to spells like limited wish, miracle, or wish. Beyond that, Demon Princes have a startling array of diverse spell-like abilities. In some cases, a Demon Prince may not have a powerful 9th level spell-like abilities that it can cast weekly, instead replacing that slot for more slots elsewhere. All Demon Princes gain the following spell-like abilities: at will: blasphemy, chaos hammer, deeper darkness, destruction, detect law, greater dispelling, harm, fear, unhallow, unholy aura, unholy blight + 45 + Charisma modifier additional spell levels under 7th level. 6/day: implosion + 7 + Charisma modifier additional spell levels. 3/day: any one power word spell. 1/day: 15 + Charisma modifier spell levels. 1/week: 9 + Charisma modifier spell levels.
If the base creature already possesses spell-like abilities but fewer than 50 at will spell levels, it gains the spell-levels as above. If the base creature has more than 50 at will spell levels (like a Balor Demon), it gains half as many new spell levels as indicated above. For example, a Balor Demon possesses a total of 74 spell levels it can cast at will; a Balor that becomes a Demon Prince would have access to 25 + Charisma modifier additional spells under 7th level at will, 3 spell levels + its Charisma modifier 6 times a day, 7 spell levels + its Charisma modifier once per day, and 4 + its Charisma modifier spell levels 1/week, in addition to its own spells and those listed above.
Demon Prince Qualities: The Demon Prince retains all of the base creature's special qualities. In the event that the base creature has qualities that are alignment specific, like protection from evil, the Demon Prince will gain the Evil version. Additionally, some special qualities may be adjusted based upon the Ravaged Form modifiers below (a Balor, for example, may lose its Body Flames and replace them with Electrical Currents). The Demon Prince also gains the following:
· Tanar'ri Qualities: If any of the benefits of these traits overlap with those of the base creature, the Demon Prince retains the better of the two.
· Demon Princes constantly detect good as 31st level Sorcerers.
· Demon Princes constantly detect magic as 31st level Sorcerers.
· Demon Princes constantly see invisibility as 31st level Sorcerers.
· Damage Reduction -- Roll a 6-sided die and refer to the following results:
1-2 = 20/+2 on any existing DR.
3-4 = 15/+3 on any existing DR.
5-6 = 10/+4 on any existing DR.
If the base creature did not possess damage reduction, it gains 30/+5 DR.
· Spell Resistance equals the Demon Prince's CR+10.
· Fast Healing/Regeneration (Ex): There is a 30% chance that the Demon Prince gains Fast Healing 15 unless struck by a cold iron or holy weapon of at least +3 enchantment strikes the Prince, or a 30% chance that the Demon Prince gains Regeneration equal to their Constitution modifier unless struck by a cold iron or holy weapon of at least +3 enhancement. Finally, there is a 40% chance that the Demon Prince gains neither quality.
· Divine Rank 0: Having attained a degree of might unknown to most Demons, Demon Princes have the spark of the divine. Demon Princes gain immunity to polymorphing, petrification, or any other attack that alters its form. A Demon Prince is not subject to energy drain, ability drain, or ability damage. A Demon Prince is immune to mind-affecting effects. Demon Princes are immortal and cannot die from natural causes. Demon Princes do not age, and they do not need to eat, sleep, or breathe. The only way for a Demon Prince to die is through special circumstances.
· Virtual Divine Rank 1: Each Demon Prince has access to one Domain and can grant these spells to its servants so long as the Prince is within 100 feet. Furthermore, the Demon Prince attains more resistances and immunities unless attacked by a god with a Divine Rank 2 or higher. Demon Princes are immune to electricity, cold, acid, and death effects if the attacker has fewer HD/levels than the fiend?s CR. Demon Princes are immune to disease and poison, stunning, sleep, paralysis, and disintegration. Finally, a Demon Prince can sense anything within one mile around the mentioning of its name, titles, or an item of importance to it. This power is barred from places associated with gods of goodness or the personal redoubts of Demiurges.
· For the purpose of gate and similar spells, Demon Princes are considered unique creatures.
Call Tanar'ri (Sp): As a standard action, all Demon Princes force their lesser brethren to obey or face obliteration. Each Demon Prince may call on lesser Demons totaling up to 50 HD three times a day. Most Demon Princes prefer a few types of Demons to others, although a few Princes seem capable of calling any and all kinds of Demons. Since these Demons are called, they have the ability to summon other Demons as their Monster Manual descriptions allow. Despite their tremendous might, Demon Princes earn no greater loyalty from lesser Demons, instead ensuring their lackeys' obedience through threat of pain or destruction. As a result, most Demon Princes are willing to call Demons when the need arises. The type of Demon called usually reflects the kind of evil the Demon Prince represents. Thus, a Demon Prince associated with the dark, foreboding skies is likely to be able to call up to six Vrock demons, while a Demon Prince dedicated to fiery destruction may seek the company of Balor demons. Of course, it is just as likely that the Demon Prince will call any kind of Demon regardless of its association. To make matters more complicated, some Demon Princes have found the means to call on other creatures as well. In such cases, these creatures are listed separately and usually have no impact on the number of times the Prince can call Demons.
Abyssal Fury (Ex): The physical presence of a Demon Prince is so disgusting that is causes lesser creatures to succumb to their hate and need to spread destruction and terror. All creatures within 60 feet of the Demon Prince must succeed in a Will save 5 + ½ the Demon's HD + the Demon's Charisma modifier + any existing enchantment bonus (e.g. from the Spell Focus: Enchantment feat). Those who succumb to the gross presence of the Demon Prince suffer one of the two following effects as determined by the Demon Prince (who can change the effect, or discontinue it, as a free action):
Fright: Affected beings become shaken and suffer a -2 morale penalty on attack rolls, saves, and checks. The merest glance or gesture from the Demon Prince makes them frightened, and they flee as quickly as they can, although they can chose the path of their flight.
Madness: The physical presence of the Demon Prince and the grotesque evil incarnate in its being drives lesser beings insane per the insanity spell. The being remains stuck in a state of madness for one day for every point by which she failed the saving throw, after which time, the victim is allowed another save. The madness exists until the victim successfully saves or the appropriate spells are cast by a 21st level being to purge the insanity effect.
The Demon Prince can make its servants, "worshippers," beings of Chaotic Evil alignment, or a mixture of all three types immune to this effect as a free action. This immunity lasts one day or until the Demon Prince dismisses it.
Demigods and higher ranked divine beings are immune to a Demon Prince's Abyssal Fury.
Abyssal Fury replaces any existing fear auras of the base creature.
Corrupting Presence (Su): So heinous is the presence of a Demon Prince that it may corrupt an entire area with but a thought. Once per day as a standard action, a Demon Prince may unhallow an area equal to 35 feet per its hit dice. The Demon Prince can apply the following spells to the unhallow effect (some of which are not listed as part of the unhallow spell in the Player's Handbook): bane, bestow curse, contagion, deeper darkness, dispel magic, silence.
The forces of righteousness disgust Demon Princes, who find goodness and holy repellent enough to give them pause. As a result, Demon Princes avoid hallowed ground. A Demon Prince attempting to enter a hallowed site must make a Will DC save equal to 40 + the divine rank of the represented god + the god's Charisma modifier (if this is unknown, assume a +9); a Demon Prince cannot use its spell resistance to overcome this effect. If the Demon Prince succeeds in entering the hallowed area, the area immediately becomes unhallowed. Once a Demon Prince breaches holy ground, the god in question is immediately alerted to the fiend's presence and will often (DM's discretion) send a proxy or an avatar to deal with the intrusion.
Abilities: Increase from the base creature as follows: Str +6, Con +4, Dex +4, Int +4, Wis +2, Cha +4
Class Levels: The Demon Prince acquires class levels. All Demon Princes have at least 15 levels in at least one class suited to their lust for destruction and power. Adjustments for skills, ability scores, and feats may be made here in addition to those associated with HD and size adjustments.
Abyssal Blessing (Su): All Demon Princes will exhibit special abilities or qualities different from their peers. For example, while most Demon Princes are completely immune to all kinds of electricity, magical or mundane, a Demon Prince ruling over a burning layer of The Abyss may be immune to fire as well. Each Demon Prince gains at least one special ability and one special quality for every 20 total HD and Levels possessed. Bear in mind that some of these abilities have no apparent association with the Demon Prince's goal or origins.
Ravaged Form: All Demon Princes evolve to a greater kind of creature, some completely losing the general build of the base creature. This happens randomly as the creature evolves into a greater form of Demon. At times the change results in only extraordinary capabilities like enhanced sensory or tactile abilities. Frequently, the Demon Prince gains supernatural powers, like a hypnotic gaze or a breath weapon. The following chart is only the beginning of the options available to an ascending Demon Prince. The Demon Prince has a 100% chance of attaining a new form based upon the chart below. Once becoming a Demon Prince, there is a 50% chance that additional HD over 35 will grant the Demon Prince the potential of further mutation.
