Demi-human.....does this term still exist?

IIRC, 1E told us that orcs, kobolds, bugbears, hobgoblins, gnolls, etc. were "humanoids", while elves, gnomes, halflings, dwarves, etc. were considered "demi-humans".

I'm trying to construct an evil ranger with his favored enemy being "demi-humans", or at least a word which approximates everything that that word once stood for in 1E. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Not anymore.

Humanoid is no longer a slang word for "evil beastmen we don't like and kill for treasure and glory" but a technical term for "mundane creatures whose shape and intelligence is close to mankind's".

So, humans, dwarves, elves, gnomes and halflings are all humanoids.

Your evil ranger could merely take humans as a favored enemy, elves as another, dwarves as the third, etc.

What Gez said. Humanoids all have a subtype (such as human, elf, etc); a ranger who wants humanoids as favored enemies must specify a subtype.

OK, so what about the term "goblinoid"? I mean, if a ranger's favored enemy is a goblinoid, he gets bonuses against all variites of goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears. But if his favored enemy is human, or elf, he's pretty screwed, yes?

Goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears are all of type "Humanoid (goblinoid)".
Elves (including subraces like drow) and half-elves are of type "Humanoid (elf)".
Dwarves (including subraces) are of type "Humanoid (dwarf)".
Orcs and half-orcs are of type "Humanoid (orc)".
Merfolk are of type "Humanoid (aquatic)".

It all comes down to the subtype.

Yep. By the way, I houseruled that rangers got to choose a subtype rather than a type as enemy. For example, aquatic or fire are valid favored enemies.
