It's been awhile since I read those. Are you intending to have Patryn and Sartan (if I'm remembering the races correctly) as playable classes?

Offhand, it sounds like Grim Tales or d20 Modern would work for you. Patryn & Sartan wouldn't be templates, just exceedingly high-level characters.

No clue on what magic system would work best for you -- I remember the magic in the Death Gate cycle being borderline freeform.

Patryn or Sartan as classes? Naw. The Patryn and Sartan are both distinct CULTURES, not classes. However, their particular forms of spellcasting do warrant their own class.

I've honest;y only read the first two books in the Death Gate Cycle, but I loved them and want to read them all. I think there's a lot of potential for d20 fun within them.

Dur. I'd meant "races", not classes.

Patryn could get +2 Con and -2 Cha, while Sartan could get +2 Int and -2 Wis or something along those lines. (This seems small, but I'd want to keep the changes small and just assume that Patryn who weren't heroic didn't make it out of the labyrinth in the first place, so you'd assume that any Patryn that escapes the labyrinth is a heroic character. By the same token, I'd assume that the Sartan, who are all fairly old and experienced at this point (because there are no new Sartan, due to the necromancy, right?), are all fairly high level as well.

If I were doing d20 Modern, I'd add advanced classes or prestige classes that only the Patryn could access (the rune magic), and similar ones for the Sartan.

Using the d20 Modern system for the Death Gate Cycle would be interesting... especially considering the numerous roles that could become classes among all the assorted worlds. Using the d20 Modern core class system would at least lend some universality to them.

Wonder what licensing would cost?

That takes me back. I remember a high school trip to DC... on the busride down I just about completed a Death's Gate Magic Expansion on notebook paper. :)

The most important thing is the setting- the Death's Gate universe was very distinct, and it wasn't mechanics so much as the very nature of things that made it special.

The Magic is another problem- the magic of the lesser races was very formulaic, not unlike nursery rhymes children learned from their parents.

The Sartans and Patryns, on the other hand, were manipulating probability in a very free-form fashion. As races, they were ECL'd a lot. For simplicity's sake, I would not even make them playable. Alfred and... that other guy... were very special individuals. Unless you were doing a Labyrinth Game they should be left as potent and mysterious NPCs.

the way I wanted to do it was create the universe especially the magic system and create campaigns from there. i figured out a lot of the stuff already but the rune magic system is the most difficult. I'm going to work with the eberron dragonmark system for the patryn magic. sartan magic will be more difficult. does anyone know the names of the houses of magic for the mencsh?
