D&D 5E Death clerics

Warpiglet-7

Lord of the depths
Dear all,

Started a cleric of Wee Jas (my favorite) and planned a melee strength cleric.

(No not taking magic initiate Druid nor a dex bonus!)

Anyway, my dm says I can do death domain as well đź’€

I am going LN and not murderous psychopath, if that effects feedback. I am going heavily armored at 1st.

In any event, curious if anyone else has had fun with a death cleric at the table and how it worked out. How are death clerics in play?

Some of the feedback might sway me back to arcana…

For further consideration outside of the purview of your post here:

For Wee Jas, I would probably consider Death/Grave, Arcana, Knowledge, or Order domains. While Wee Jas is a goddess of death, she is almost more of a Magic & Law goddess, who increasingly picked up Death as a result of the Suloise people looking to her for consolation after the Great Cataclysm and her tolerance of necromancy.

The real temptation for me when building a priest of Wee Jas, however, would be to take one level of Cleric and then go the rest in Wizard.

This gets to the central conundrum of the subclass, half their features are about melee and half are about blasting. It's best if you like to do a bit of both rather than optimize heavily for one or the other.
It’s true. I looked and thought I can do both reasonably well! I could throw chill touch at a great distance and then be ready for melee (or toll of the dead).

The channel divinity only goes so far without rests. I think you’re right, mixing it up is the way to go.

This all started out as an arcana cleric. Was totally done when I realized I had never looked at the death cleric.

I even saw the order domain and paused too.

My plan was to go against type so to speak and lean into melee. Regardless of domain, I was going with heavy armor via feat and strength.

My whole deal was average intelligence and bitterness about not being better wizard material—-only through persistence and great determination and an intuitive feel (wis) was magic revealed to him.

On the other hand, I don’t feel bad about taking magic initiate or other magic feats due to her (wee Jas) connection with magic!

Going to read more about the great cataclysm etc.—-thanks for the mention.

My friend is porting wee Jas to a pseudo realms (I am not into the realms at all) so not sure how prominent he is making wee jas or if I am here to start a cult!
