Daredevil Reviewed! [spoilers and so forth]

I've seen it! it's out in the UK, and I went to see it today, partially because I wanted to get my review up here first...:D

Firstly, I have to say that I knew very little about Daredevil before I saw this. I knew about him, that he was a blind lawyer, I knew about the Kingpin and I'd seen pictures of Elektra. So my opinion should be fairly unbiased.

I mostly liked this film. Affleck does a good job acting blind, and has the physique and moves to make me believe he's a hero. All the cast have clearly been working hard to look good enough to do this film, and that is in some ways the problem.

They all look like trained movie stars doing wire fighting. They don't make me believe that they're real characters. I couldn't get away from the fact that it was a film.

The best section was Murdoch meets Elektra in the park, with the two of them testing each out and pulling some good stuff on seesaws and so on. That's the fun section. Later on, the film tries a bit too hard to be dark and mysterious.

SPOILER

Elektra's apparent death is far too quick. Bullseye just beats her in about 30 seconds whilst Daredevil watches, barely able to move, but once she's dead, he's up and fighting and of course, he wins. It's all too predictable and easy. There's no imagination or reason for him not to get up earlier apart from "plot device." Ugh.

That said, I did enjoy the film. The cast all have a good chemistry, they play well off each other. Affleck and his lawyer friend in particular have a good on screen buddy feeling to them, and the Kingpin is full of quiet menace.

I give it 3/5, which to me means that it isn't a waste of time to go see it by any means, but neither is it a must see film and it falls a long way short of being a masterpiece.

Just my 2p (I'm English :)), and I hope this thread sparks some good discussion from other people once they've seen it too.

Wow I thought they had NO chemistry at all. Each was acting in a vacuum and the end fights were just laid one on top of the other. If you read the comics you'll know Elektra should not be a pushover. Anyway, i doubt if she really dies in this movie.

As for the scene in the end credits, I thought there was one shot too many. I think if you just HEARD it and left it there, it would have been sufficient. There was no need to see it.

About the end credits.. was there just the one scene in the hospital? I had a feeling there might be another credits-scroll scene, but my wife wanted to go, heh.

Just got back from seeing it. I loved it. Some minor details were different and Daredevil started the story arch darker than he should have.

Funny - the Bullseye electra fight was perfect. It is nearly word for word what was written by Frank Miller 15+ years ago. The set-up is different but the way she was killed WAS one of the most brutal and shocking scenes in comic books when it occured. I thought it was whimppy to not have DD get up in time, maybe they should have had him fall from the building or something. He did get up a little too quick in the church, but it is arguable that some time had gone by since the Electra fight.

I thought the gunfight in the beginning should have been done differently.

Actually, she did'nt die in the movie. Who do you think left MM/DD the braille good luck piece at the end on the roof?

Mother Mary? ;)

Still, the whole thing felt like the pilot episode of a tv series. If there is a DD2, I hope they'll get RIGHT to the story.

End credits' scene? You mean I left too early?!?! Nuts.

I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Good in a lot of ways, not as awesome as I had hoped it might be.

Daredevil's been one of my favorite super-heroes, ever since the Born Again saga by Frank Miller. The movie does a lot of things more-or-less right: action scenes are well done, the script is good, the characters are faithful to the comics. I had no problems with any of the major cast (although, I've always seen Urich as a scruffier guy).

Where I found the film somewhat lacking is that there wasn't enough of Daredevil. By that, I mean that we never really got a sense of what makes him so great. The never-say-die attitude from the Born Again saga is touched on, but we don't feel it. Nothing in the movie makes me feel like Matt Murdock is different from any other movie action hero. The only distinctive things about him are his powers and costume. The Matt Murdock I know from Born Again, and the Man Without Fear mini (also by Frank Miller) is a much more compelling character.

The wire fu was alright, but I also would have preferred a more realistic style, which is more fitting to the character. Daredevil's always been a street level hero. Something more Buffy-esque might have given it a grittier feel, which seems to be what they were aiming for. It's too bad they left out Stick and Matt's mom, but it's probably for the best, given how many characters they had already.

I think the movie will be successful enough to generate a sequel. If so, I'd go see it.

You had me up until you mentioned Buffy....

You thought they should have portrayed him as more of a comedic vampire slaying high school cheerleader? And that would be MORE gritty?
