Dagger Throwing Contest

Shape D.

First Post
So in the current game I'm playing there is supposed to be a large festival coming up. Part of the festival is various contests including a dagger throwing contest. The only problem is there is now RAW for said contest. The closest thing I could find were the archery contest rules in the (CW). I'm just wondering if this makes sense for an adaption of those rules.

(I Don't have the book with me so I'm jus paraphrasing here)
Target starts out 150' away, Bullseye ac13, inner ring ac9, outer ring ac7. Each Shooter gets 5 shots, 4 points for a bullseye, 2 for the inner ring and 1 for the outer ring. In the event of a tie the target gets moved back to 250', and another tie results in the target being moved back to 350'. Any further ties would result in the contest being declared a tie or the tagets being changed to "moving targets" increasing the ac by 5.

My thought is they would use the same size target, and have the same ac for everything just changing the range. A longbow has a range of 100' and the range of the target starts at 150' (range of weapon +50%) and moves back 100' each round(one range increment).

So here is what I came up with:
Round one target 15' away. Increasing to 25' for the second round, and to 35' for the third round. Ties after third round result in a decloration of a tie or tagets being switched to moving targets adding +5 to the ac of the target.
part of target...........Bullseye.......Middle ring......Outer ring
AC.............................13.................9...................7
Points awarded.............4..................2...................1

Just want to know what people think and if this makes sense.

Sounds fine man.

My advice to you however: screw RAW.

Yeah, rules are great and all... but don't feel bound by them. Never let the RAW get in the way of great storytelling.

Before I saw the ruleset you were planning, I was thinking 15ft away, 3 throws, AC 10, 15, 20. Your adapted archery rules looks fine too. :D Lemme know how it works.

We don't need the Gods of WotC to come down and give us a ruleset for everything though.

I realize my disdain for RAW pretty much brands me as a Heretic. So be it >.<

I was trying to find something that mad sense and would be simple to impliment, and have a decent dc for hitting the targets. But at the same time I figured it would have to be something that would be plausable for a "regular NPC". this being said though my 8th level character after mods has a +14 to hit with a dagger, far shot, and point blank shot. So on a roll of 2 or higher (only because 1 is an automatic falure) for any "non moving target" he can hit any of those range increments without any problem.

My DM told me to try and find some form of rules for it so I was trying to find something that made sense. But at the same time if I take this to the DM it seems somewhat easy for my character. (although my character specialises in throwing daggers, so its understandable he'd be good at it. That and there's probobly not going to be many 8th level or higher NPC's in the contest.)

Your lower DCs quite possibly make more sense. How hard is it to hit a Dart board? :P

Try treating the targets as object (-5 due to AC because of Dex, yada yada) with size and range penalties (getting a bullseye may be equivalent to hitting a Fine object, etc). Closest I think the RAW gets to it.

Your DM can base the point system and ranges as needed. Perhaps ties at the end of the contest will be solved by throws at 50 feet...

So, if your character starts throwing improvised objects, do we call him Bullseye??
(Marvel reference. Couldn't help myself :) )

The quickest rule would be:

Target has AC 10. Highest number on the d20 after mods wins.
Adjust AC for higher difficulty (smaller, moving, distance, etc.) targets.

Hmm, but what else burns...
(um, wood?)
Yes! And what happens to wood if you place it in water?
[consternation]... (it, uh, it sinks? no, no it floats!)
And what else floats?
(Um, a rock?) - [the King] (A duck!)
Precisely! So if he weighs the same as a duck, he's a heretic!

I really don't think the House Rules forum is the best place for this lynch mob, considering the entire point of the forum is deviating from the RAW. Perhaps we should instead catch him in the act in the D&D Rules forum?
