Can anyone tell me how to calculate prices in goldpieces into a purchase DC for the d20 Modern Wealth system in the SRD? I am thinking about using it for my fantasy games.

Thanks for your help

If you're using Wealth for a DnD-fantasy game then you're shattering it. Same thing if you use DnD-style magic items with D20 Modern rules.

There's an official answer hidden somewhere in Bullet Points. I believe it was 1 gp = $20. (Then convert, using the $ to Wealth chart.)

Want a tip?

Convert 1 for 1, GP to $$. It doesn't really work at the VERY LOW END, because you can't really price anything less than 5gp.

But guess what? That never matters anyway. At 1st level characters buy a whole bunch of 1gp or less items (bedrolls, backpacks, caltrops, etc) and then 99% of games never bother with any of it again. By 2nd level you're looking at Masterwork Weapons in the 350+gp realm.

What you do is halve the starting Wealth Bonus for D&D style characters to 1d4+X Wealth, with +0-+2 bonuses for starting gold from class. This will put, on average, alchemical items like Smoke Sticks and Tanglefoot Bags in the category of "Expensive Starting Items". (At 20gp a Smoke Stick would be DC 4).

The only thing after that is to realize that Mastercraft Weapons, at 350GP-range, are DC 14 and DC 15 is the "always pings your Wealth" level. Simple solution is to crank down that level to DC 14 and be done with it.

If you go with something like 20$ = 1gp, you rapidly get to areas where high-end magical items cost 2 Million Bucks. 1-to-1, high-end Magical Items top out around 200,000gp (+10 Equiv Weapon) which is DC 36, which is around the high edge of the Wealth system where it starts to break down a little.

My last change would be to nix the Profession rules. In a D&D economy, you can't make the money that an Adventurer brings in by baking bread in town. Just doesn't work. Adventurers are in a class by themselves.

Other than that, it works fine.

So in summary:

1-to-1 GP to Dollar conversion for Purchase DCs.

DC 14 replaces DC 15 for "Purchases of DC X+ always subtract 1 Wealth bonus."

Characters begin with 1d4 Wealth Bonus +0-+2 based on Class.

No Profession rules for gaining back Wealth Bonus. Characters have to find lewt ... because that's what D&D is all about, yo.

EDIT: As to where to find the actual chart of Dollars To DCs ... I think that might actually be WotC Intellectual Property because it isn't included in any SRD that I know of.

Which means you'll have to find an Open Game Content formula for creating the DCs or buy the d20Modern core rule book. (We all know what my suggestion would be, but I likes me some d20M.)

There's a formula at work there, but my degree is in English. Roughly every doubling in price is +3 DC after about DC 7 and 55$.

The Grim Tales sourcebook has a gp to Wealth conversion table, and at some point Wulf posted an Excel converter. Can't find it right now, though . . .
