D20 Modern Vehicle Miniatures

Hello All,

So I'm trying to do the math on what size a vehicle for D20 Modern as compared to the 28mm figures should be. I believe it comes out to 1/65 scale. The majority of Hot Wheels and other die cast miniatures ate 1/64 scale. But I took a look at those things and they look ridiculously tiny compared to the miniatures themselves.

Am I missing something? And if 1/64 isn't a good scale, does anyone produce vehicles that are on a scale perfect for miniatures?

Thanks in advance!

So in other words, are you saying that even if you have a car that matches say, the Ford Crown (AKA police vehicle) size of 2 squares wide by 4 squares long...it won't be to scale with 28mm miniatures?

I can live with that, but I just want to be sure before I go blowing 50 bucks on vehicles.

The next noticable scale step up from hot wheels feels about right. I feel hot weels are too small to feel proper.

$50?! Check garage sales and dollar stores before you go retail shopping. Bring a typical mini with you and compare it to the vehicles to find what feels right in the store.

Vehicles that look the best with the current miniatures (28mm sort of) are 1/43 scale.
You can use anything that size or smaller and it will work.

You have to realize that one of the reasons the minis don't look right, is the space they take up, but also because many 28mm miniatures are actually quite a bit larger than true-scale 28mm.

The best thing to do is get a couple of cheap plastic models in a couple of scales and see how they look. Or go to a store that carries models and see if they have any on display. Bring a typical mini and compare.

Good luck and Game ON!

creatures take up the square and thus are built to fit inside the 25mm square, so they are not to scale really.
Never met a [human] character whose girth can fill up a 5-foot square, gamer or otherwise. ;)

A Crown Victoria that can fill up a 2 x 4 space is good enough. The characters would be seated closed to one another, thus their fighting spaces would be overlapping.

Talien, you probably want 1/48 scale minis, which are made by an italian publisher. You can get them in toy stores or online for about $3 a car. They work swell :)

Hiya Alex,

Thanks! Incidentally, I plan to use your Most Wanted supplement with our D20 Modern game (heresy, I know). Excellent job!

Found an interesting note on the Wizard site: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20modern/fb/20040427a

For simulating vehicle combat, I like to use toy vehicles, such as Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars, or other similarly scaled vehicles. (Hot Wheels and Matchbox are both Mattel, Inc. products, but they're also readily available to everyone.) Since this method doesn't rely on squares, it doesn't matter how big the toys or models are in relation to each other. A 1/35th scale plastic model works just as well as a die-cast toy, provided that you make a big enough diagram.

Alternatively, you could find a copy of Polyhedron magazine #152, which includes vehicle counters that you can photocopy and use in your game. (They're part of a d20 minigame written by yours truly.)
