This isn't quite the same as what you're looking for, but it's similar: E6: The Game Inside D&D.

E6 uses the d20 system rules, but it's major difference is that it caps play at 6th level. After that, you can gain some more feats, but that's it. It's a very innovative concept, and I'm quite enamored of it. It's free to use (since it was made up here on EN World) and if you know the d20 system, you already know it!

I think you have looked at it before, but in case you haven't here are some "Quick Start" rules for a free look at the basics.

Its Castles and Crusades. Its really good if you have versions of D&D you would like to still be able to easily use/adapt. Together. If you think you would like to just go back to 1E/OSRIC, then just do that.

Thanks! The problem is that I don't "just want to go back" to 1E. I think the retro-clone games are pretty cool, but they're still not exactly what I'm looking for (I started playing with 1e, but I'm not that big on nostalgia. I like 3e too...and even some of 2e!). I'm trying to check out everything that's out there, and then I'll hack together something of my own. Just for fun.
