D&D Dragons - McFarlane Dragons ?

Has anyone used the McFarlane toy dragons as dragons in their D&D games ?

If so, how well do they 'scale' to the D&D collectible miniatures for the purposes of representing dragons in the D&D RPG ?

Does anyone have any recommendations for basing them on some kind of circular disk similar to the ones the D&D minis occupy ?

Thanks!

well... Frankly, I just use one of these...

(exact dragon not pictured)

it's about a foot tall, I put it on a circle of paper that represents it's "size"

EDIT:

Ahh! I found something you might be interested in! a review from the Kevin-smith inspired "movie poop shoot dot com"

Some folks have commented on the scale, and that is something that might be an issue for you. These are fairly small, comparatively speaking. They'll work great with knights figures from miniature games, like Mage Knight, but aren't intended to work with anything over a couple inches tall. That shouldn't really be a surprise though, since these are at the same price point as any 8" McFarlane figure, so they certainly couldn't be 18" figures and still be that price.

Nearly all are gargantuan, some comes close to huge, the box sets nearly are collosal.

The series one Komodo dragon's built up base fits just onto a CD ROM. Feels about gargantuan.

The slightly smaller dark red [photo is purple, actual fig is not.] komodo series 2 just barely fits on a 3 inch round base for huge. Slightly big for huge, but so was wotc's huge red from the mini game.

McFarlane Mixed with metal and DDM

I have a small collection of McFarlane mixed with some old metal for gargantuan dragons and a Tir Na Nog toy dragon that stands in for colossal. The PHB is there for scale for the size of the Coossal Red coming in September. Add some of the DDM dragons for scale as well.

Regarding bases I don't use round bases for anything larger than huge. Usually square bases or square with rounded corners.

While none of the McFarlane dragons are really "D&D" types, I think they're quite usable, even if they are a tad large.

The beauty of them is price- I typically find them for $10USD each in places like Toys-R-Us, Wal-Mart, and other discount toy retailers.

The Komodo dragons fit blue, red, and giant half-dragons almost perfectly.

When I saw this thread title I thought that WoTC finally decided that $40 dragons that were okay didn't work and decided to have McFarlane toys pick up and do 'official' Dragons for the line. Damn! Now I'm upset that it's not the case. With the level of detail those toys have, they'd make great figures.

Ah well.

We have one McFarlane dragon for our group.
We don't get to use it often and we need to set up a base for it to match the right size of the dragon. But it much more impressive as a dragon than the DDM dragon figs.

McFarlane's Dragons series 4 is now out. The Sorcerer Clan Dragon 4 is the best mini for a Dark Sun Dragon King i have ever seen. The Tail curls around the crystal ball and a black 'shooter' marble will fit perfectly for an Obsidian Orb.

Back at GenCon I bought a Komodo dragon for a friend and it'd fill in perfectly for a Gargantuan Red Dragon (it sure as hell was larger than the Huge Aspect of Bahamut he got). It was the deep-red one with the yellowish belly.
