Creature Competition: Iron Golem vs. Rust Monster

The first round had a very clear winner. The Ankheg beat out the Hive Queen by a large margin.

Now we have a classic "battle" (even though they have gone to pains to make sure we realize this isn't a battle...which would have a clear winner in this case). I expect this one to be lopsided, even though there are two classic D&D monsters together.

I do like the themes in the first round here. Next round we have the dragony wormy creatures, then we have the demons, then we have the beastlike creatures, the legendary reptile battle, the oddities and finally the giants.

Go Iron Golem, go, go! But seriously I can see WoTC expanding on it more then the Rust Monster. The Rust Monster is just a beast with a special trait, the Iron Golem can take on various sizes, shapes, types of toxins, etc. Also reasons for it to be created, perhaps a ritual for creating it, etc.

Gooooooo Rusty!

Rusty! Rusty! Rusty!

The Rust Monster is cute and cuddly, with big fluffy antennae and this adorable look on its face.

Clearly the Rust Monster is awesome beyond words.

Don't know much about creature competitions, but in third edition we used a summoning variant to summon a rust monster.

Took out two iron golems without any issue (surprise round and got initiative the next round).

I wouldn't think it's remotely possible for a single rust monster to kill an iron golem. The golem would just...step on it. Fight over, take a little rusty damage. Now a rust monster swarm would be a different matter.

mmmm....swarm....

Looking at the srd, it specifically says rust monsters can affect iron golems (under the golem entry).

Touch attack at +3 for rust monster vs Iron Golem's touch ac of 8.

Reflex save dc 17 (under rust monster entry) vs Iron Golem's save of +5.

So with an 80% chance to be hit and a 60% chance to fail its reflex save (or die), I'd say the iron golem is not in great shape.

Course, a rust monster has 27hp, and an ac of 18. The golem has a +23 to hit (hitting 95% of the time) and does 2d10+11 damage (average of 22).

The golem would have to hit the rust monster twice or roll 5 above average to drop the rust monster. Unless it had a full attack, it likely lose. It seems unlikely it would get a full attack, though as it would either have to move to the rust monster to hit it, or, more lkely, the rust monster would charge it and get its own attack in first.

It seems this would be fairly dependent upon initiative, and the rust monster has a +3 while the golem has a -1.

My vote: rusty.
