COTSQ - Why is Lolth Silent in Your Campaign?

Hullo,

(SPOILERS, so players of City of the Spider Queen may wish to stay away)

I'm running COTSQ and having a great time doing so. However, the PCs have almost conquered Szith Morcane and I still haven't figured out plot wise why Lolth has fallen silent. The module itself does not give any explanation whatsoever (most likely to get you to buy the new line of drow novels). I've heard the rumors about the books- that Lolth has gone silent because she's creating a new avatar or something. Since I don't use the Forgotten Realms, I have no reason to use this explanation (also I don't find it particularly interesting). (If you're interested, I've also substituted Orcus for Kianransalee).

So I'm wondering- what have other people invented when they've run this module? My PCs are very curious and eventually I'll need to have some compelling reason. Anyone have anything good? Why is the Spider Goddess silent?

Thanks,
Drakon

I haven't run the module, but I'd make her silent becasue she is building up forces else where. So, while the PCs are distracted there she's got a check mate plan in motion.

there was a cool post about burning out the sun

I can't remember where I saw it, but some guy had an idea about Shar extinguishing the sun. To go along with the earlier thread, Lolth is building forces else where and is going to extingush the sun so her drow ( or other nasty creations ) can invade the surface in darkness.

good idea

I mentioned that Lolth was making an army. You could use the Drider template from Wotc's website and combine that with any monster. Drider-orge army anyone?

Greater Goddess

My guess from the novels is that Lolth is evolving from a Lesser Goddess into a Greater Goddess.

Thanks for the ideas! :)

The idea of blotting out the sun is interesting. I could also use the drider template idea- a drider ogre would be pretty cool. I guess I've been thinking along the lines that she is involuntarily silent due to the activity of her foes. One theory I had was to use Monte Cook's dungeon mag. adventure where Lolth's daughter is plotting against her (I forget her name- Laveth?).

Thanks for the ideas so far. Anyone else come up with something for their campaign on why Lolth is silent?

In my campaign, she's dead. Yeah, dead. Read the novel Queen of the Demonweb Pits and you'll know the why and how of it. I run my games with the 2E cosmology, so what happens over there affects what happens over here. Of course, once the new series has run its course and things are permanently resolved, I'll think up a way to seamlessly tie up the two yarns.

I have Lolth Silent because she is evolving into a Greater Goddess.

Nice Idea :)

My Idea:
Lolth remains silent because she had lost influence on the Drow.
Vhaeraun had gained much influence on the Drow. Lolth uses her powers to build an army to crush the followers of Vhaeraun. Unknown to her is the fact that followers of Vhaeraun are secretly sponsored by the demon prince Grazz´t. Grazz´t wants Lolth´s powers to be decreased, so he uses every opportunity (even to sponsor the followers of another god) to do this. Lolth has to fight to remain the major evil power she was.

Just my 2 cents
