Slippers of Spider Climbing

When worn, a pair of these slippers enable movement on vertical surfaces or even upside down along ceilings, leaving the wearer’s hands free. Her speed is 20 feet. Severely slippery surfaces—icy, oiled, or greased surfaces— make these slippers useless. The slippers can be used for 10 minutes per day, split up as the wearer chooses.

Faint transmutation; CL 4th; Craft Wondrous Item, spider climb; Price 4,800 gp;Weight ½ lb.

You likely already knew about those, but I post them here only because I don't allow the creation of magic items that duplicate an existing item in such a specific manner.

Thanks Hammerhead for the price, although it seems odd that the price is cheaper than the original (and weaker) pair in the DMG ;)

Cedric, perhaps I should have been more specific. I knew about the original magic item. I am looking for the price of the slippers as if the spider climb was continuous and not 10 minutes per day.

Cheers

My bad, I'm off my 400. They pretty much seem to be the exact same thing, since the time limit is high. My point is why not just use the baseline item instead of creating something with a very minor change?

Hammerhead, you think a change of duration from "10 minutes a day" to "continuous all day" is minor?

I thought that was a pretty big change (esp. for dungeon crawls, and urban adventures), climbing up walls all day long, rogues getting the drop (literally) on everything, etc.
Perhaps the usefulness is only good for short periods of time, so no one requires a longer duration?

Hmm, I still think it's more expensive.

Okay, so a vote for "roughly" same price. Any other thoughts?

Cheers

The limited time is probably only there to make them balanced vs skilled climbers. If you put in play some non-limited ones for a cheap price, you're saying to the rogue who took Climb that one of his skill is useless. The same problem can occur with an Hat of Disguise and spells that duplicate skills. (I prefer that skills always have some benefits over magic version)

I figured as much, that's why I added...

If you create a magic item that duplicates the powers/abilities of an existing item only it does it ...less expensively, more effectively, etc...I disallow those.

Though, players are free to state their case, if I think the original item is underpowered or this is a distinct improvement, I might allow it.

I agree skeptic. It can replace a skill set completely.

That's why I am wondering at the price, and how expensive it should be.

I have a DM that simply made the current slippers continuous, at the same price. I don't agree with him, even though it's in my favor. It can be a bad precedent for other items. I just want to get some shared opinions and a new price.

Cheers

using the DMG table 7-33 (pg 285) and selecting the Command Word option i came up with 14,400gp [2(spell lvl)*4(caster lvl)*1800], if you use the Use-activated option it comes out to 24,000gp [2(spell lvl)*4(caster lvl)*2000*1.5(for having a 10min/lvl duration)]. The only problem with using the table is that Wizards did not use the formulas presented in their own books for all the magical items listed, such as Heward's Handy Haversack which should cost 45,000gp [5(spell lvl)*9(caster lvl)*2000*.5(for having a 24hr or greater duration)] instead of 2000gp they listed.
So... it really comes down to the DM and play to do one of 3 things:
1) forget the item
2) follow table 7-33 from the DMG to the letter
3) the DM and the PC discuss and agree upon a price greater than that of the orginal item

EDIT: I used the caster levels listed for the items in the DMG instead of the lowest possible caster level.
