Cone-shaped area spells & Color Spray

Please someone tell me if it's only because I cannot find this in the 3.5 SRD!

In 3.0 a Cone was defined so that the range was the height of the cone and the width at the end of the range itself (something like a sector of a circle with 27degrees of opening).

In 3.5 a Cone is defined as a quarter circle, that is 90degrees of opening.

Since most of the Cone spells seems to have now a fixed range instead of Close, they don't improve with caster level but they still cover an area which is about 3 times as before! Although it is possibly more difficult to use a Cone spell in combat since it may be more difficult than before to avoid hitting your friends.

(I thought of this when looking at Color Spray, which IMHO was already a very nice 1st level spell since it retained at higher levels the good usefulness of at least dazing many creatures of any HD for a round.
The 3.5 Color Spray has only 15ft range but also the limit of 1d6 creatures is no more!)

Not exactly sure what it is you are asking, but, yes, the new version of the spell is as you described it. It affects everyone within a 15 ft. cone shaped burst and affects any number of HD.

The trade off between a longer range, but random (1d6) numbers affected against a shorter range with exact numbers affected (technically, up to 7) is a balanced one, imo. It is a well used spell at low-mid levels imc.

I was asking if it is true that "cone" shape is totally changed in 3.5, or if I am overlooking something in the SRd...
