Companion Spirits?

Inspired by the discussion in this thread, I've been reading up on the concept starting in DMG II p.194 of Companion spirits. I've also found some info in Dragon Magic p.92.

My questions are as follows:

1. Are there any other books that have info on companion spirits?

2. Has anyone ever used them and can recommend which builds are useful, while others are not so much? I'm sure it varies depending on what the party needs, but I'd like to hear if anyone can made use of this ritual.

The Magical Storing Companion Spirit looks awesome, I've got a Transmuter War Weaver build I've not yet had the opportunity to play, but if I do I'd want to build this Companion Spirit into the character design.

To my knowledge, there are no other sources concerning companion spirits. The paladin ACF in Dungeonscape that trades out the celestial mount for a series of summonable spirits is close, though, you might want to look into that.

This isn't the same as the ones you mentioned but Shifter druids can trade the typical animal companion for a beast spirit. You get scaling physical attribute bonuses in which you can trade for others at your leisure. It even allows you to buff and summon a heck of a lot better freeing up actions for other uses such as what a shifter does best.:D

As I recall, the OA Shaman also has companion spirits (if used, make sure you get the 3.5Ed update in Dragon #318 OA 3.5 by original OA designer James Wyatt).

I haven't looked, but it's possible the Sha'ir's assistant may technically be a Spirit (DCv1).

Other than that, ask your bartender about the best spirits for companions. ;)
