City of Greyhawk Campaign Setting (a la Neverwinter)?

One of the big criticisms I hear about bringing Greyhawk back as a setting is that it's a "generic fantasy setting" and would compete with some of the same real estate as the Forgotten Realms.

It occurs to me, though, that maybe the approach is wrong. Maybe, rather than bringing back the whole setting, we should focus on the City of Greyhawk itself.

I was thinking that maybe a sourcebook a la Neverwinter would be the way to go. And while it can still be a part of the greater Greyhawk setting, it could also be a standalone city that could be put into any setting (think Ptolus). There is some precedent with how Nerath is cannibalizing some of Greyhawk's greatest dungeons.

What do you think?

I would support this in a few years. But back to back cities would not be best, I think.

I am really hoping for something truly new for next year.

I think that's actually a pretty great idea. I'd buy it, even though I said before I don't think I need a 4e Greyhawk given that the 1e fluff suits me just fine.

I have to confess - the Neverwinter book took me by surprise. I don't much care for the Realms, except for the Grey Box version, but it's so solid from cover to cover that I'm considering running a Realms game in the future, now. I'd love to see Greyhawk given the same treatment, though it surprises me to say so.

I'm always up for new (good) Greyhawk material. I;d love to see Mearls' pre-wars GH campaign setting supplement.

I'm also up for a CoG supp.

I think WOTC learned their lesson though with FR- they had to pretty much blow it up to work all the 4E-isms into it, and I'd wager most GH fans don't want to see Dragonborn, Eladrin, 4E tieflings, etc in GH (and that is just one example). And on the other hand most 4E fans probably want to see those 4Eisms in any and all products they buy.

I know for my own tastes I was a little annoyed with the 4Eisms they dropped into the re-write of Hommlet ( the one they sent out a couple years back via the RPGA). That said, I still much prefer VoH re-tooled for 4E than the atrocity of Monte Cooks 3rd edition RttToEE module and its version of Hommlet.

I think a more generic POL style GH/Waterdeep/Lhankmar that any DM could drop into his campaign may be a better seller? IDK.

Oh, I think most of the new races would be fine.

Tieflings could slide right in with how involved demons and devils are with the setting! You could reskin them as Cambions without too much of an effort, demon/devil distinctions notwithstanding.

Much like in Neverwinter, I could see "subraces" of Eladrin for Grey Elves and High Elves, and subraces of Elves for Wood and Wild elves. So no problems there, either.

Dragonborn? Yeah, no idea there. :) It's a big continent, though, with a lot of uncharted territories to the west, so who knows?
