Cigarette?

How, by the rules as written, does one smoke a cigarette? How long does it take you to get out your cigarette and light it? Pretend for the sake of the argument that common sense does not exist, only D&D items and rules are available, and that cigarettes are described as follows:

Cigarette - Cigarettes come in packs of 10 to 20, and cost 1 cp each. Lighting a cigarette is a standard action that provokes an attack of opportunity, and requires a fire source. To light a cigarette, it must be in the mouth of someone who can breathe. Whenever you first light a cigarette, you take 1 point of nonlethal damage, but gain a +1 morale bonus to all attack rolls, checks, and saves for 1 round. Then, for as long as you keep the cigarette in your mouth (to a maximum of 5 minutes, after which the cigarette burns out), you gain a +1 morale bonus to Charisma-based checks.

You should probably add that regular users of cigarettes have to make a fort save once a year, DC15. If they fail, they take a point of perminant CON damage. Yanno, for versimilitudes sake :D

Lower the DC. Smoking kills, but not -that- fast. :p

Anyway, regarding the cigarette proposal: exact same rules for retrieving and using a potion.

Ok, say DC12. That way, a lvl1 commoner with below average luck on their rolls, with average con, will die in about 15-20 years.

Probably not even that high of a DC. Most smokers start in their teens or early 20s, and, if it kills them, doesn't do so in most cases until their 50s or later.

Hmmm. Smokers with one box per day live 7 years less... smokers with two boxes per day 22 IIRC.

DC +1 for 1000 cigarettes? Each year the count starts new?

Don't forget the difficulties in exploring a non-smoking dungeon.

"Guys, we gotta get out of here and camp."
"Why, is your wizard out of spells?"
"Nah, I just gotta smoke."

I am amused by the death by cigarette discussion, but you're totally missing the point of the thread.

I want to light a cigarette. That's:

Move action to draw the pack of cigarettes.
Move action to pull out a cigarette from the pack.
Move action to put the pack of cigarettes back.
Free or move action to put cigarette in your mouth. 'Manipulating an item' is a move action, after all.
(Or perhaps just two move actions if your DM is generous - one to retrieve the stored cigarette, a free action to .)

Move action to draw a box of matches.
Move action to pull out a match.

Rely on D&D logic here.

What's faster? Pulling out and lighting a cigarette or reloading a heavy crossbow, if you're know what you're doing in either case?

Accordingly, if you have the pack in hand starting to smoke should be a full-round action. Consider adding Metal Gear-inspired feats to make smokers more badass.
