Cheap miniature solutions

I'm sure many people have noticed that miniatures are expensive if you don't have a ton of cash, but I think I have found a great solution to this problem. In the past, I have bought a few of the expensive pewter (I think) miniatures, and even some of those Mage Knight thingies. I was walking around in the mall yesterday with some friends, however, when I noticed homies . I was impressed that they only cost $0.50 each, and after buying one and inspecting it, we noticed that it would be the perfect size for gaming. We emptied the vending machine they were being sold in, each of us pumping in about $5 worth of quarters. After playing a game with them, I can tell you that homies ( I am really unsure of the spelling... sorry) are a great gaming investment! We have even proposed painting the ones that are being used as PCs. In addition to homies, we also use those cheap, plastic army men in our games. Both are economical solutions for someone who wants a bunch of minis to use in his game, but just isn't able to afford them.

Homies are something you'll find in gumball machines. I'm old as dirt, too, and it's kinda fun to be shopping in gumball machines again after about 30 years.

THey're little plastic-rubber figures. There are actually several sets of them.

And, just now, I actually found a bunch opf web sites devoted to them. Here's a place to buy them (and see what they look like):

They make great cheap figures, although some don't stand up very well. One of the real advantages is that they're rubber -- you don't have to treat them nicely, the way you have to be with painted minis.

I'll second the food idea.

Edible minis for monsters are a great thing. Whatever snacks are handy serve us quite well. M&M's are nice - different colors for each creature so the DM can keep track. We also use goldfish crackers often. For the health conscious - grapes work quite well.

Bigger monsters require bigger items. Marshmallow peeps, Mallow-mars, Oreos and other cookies are great for large monsters.

The possibilities are endless. And whoever gets the killing blow gets to eat the monster. Cheaper than real minis, and there's a limitless supply.

Another great source of cheap minis-

I picked up a board game called Star Wars Epic Battles at Wal-Mart a while back. It was about 20$. The game had about 40 little plastic figures -- covering major characters from all the star wars movies, including a handful of stormtroopers and soldier droids, Imperial guards (the red guys) Yoda, Young Obiwan, Luke, Leia, Amidala, Han Solo, Boba and Jango Fett, Chewie, Dooku, Maul, Vader, and more. Nevermind the rest of the game, that makes a cool set of figures for about $.50 each.
