Chaos Mage?

Has anyone any experience with the chaos mage? Is it cool, does the spellcasting work or what? I find the concept cool, I just doubt that it works out of the book, in a campaign.
Anyone?

There is a strong learning curve on Chaos Mage - if a player takes one, make sure he knows the rules inside out or he _will_ bog down the game (or end up doing nothing, as the GM passes him by yet again). If a player has read the book thoroughly, you should find things run fairly smoothly - though Chaos Mages rarely have a happy ending :)

It might help if you clarified which Chaos Mage. Do you mean in Mongoose's Chaos Magic, of as it exists in Spells & Spellcraft, or something different?

Have you ( or anybody else) played one? Was it cool, tell me all about it:)

I'm talking about Encyclopaedia Arcane: Chaos Magic (Moongoose)

At the moment, we are playing a D&D Renaissaince/7th Sea kinda cross in the office campaign, and one of the players took a Gnomish Chaos Mage (to go alongside his brother, who was a regular Wizard). The biggest problem in session one was that the player had not read the rules in their entirety, which resulted in him trying to do things that are just not allowed! The second session, however, was better, as he had several 'prepared' spells and was able to take a more active role.

Moral of the story - know the rules, as this character is nothing like a regular Wizard or Sorcerer!

Just be careful to get the web enhancement... and errata and so. Without errata, most of the damage goes against Fort saves ... that makes it way tooo easy to kill enemy spellcasters :D

I love the idea, and plan on playing one in my next campaign (DM approval pending, of course). Can't wait for the Quintessential Chaos Mage book. :)

I'm also somewhat tempted to start my own webpage on the matter. Create some new 'spells', maybe even a few new effects (Sensory and Summoning are two I'd love to work out...).
