D&D 5E Broke a Staff of Power tonight ... it felt EPIC!

It was the finale/last fight in a 1-13 campaign. The PC died (no teleport away), the BBEG saved and did not quite die from that but he was very close and the party cleaned him up on the next turn.

44 years of D&D and this is the first time I have seen it done at the table.
Breaking a staff of power or staff of the magi has always been something that I've wanted to do. It's an epic way to go out and if it stops the BBEG then your character's name will be remembered forever (in that campaign world).

We had someone at the table break one back in 2e days to save the day. It was epic. The one we remember the most was the time was used critical fumbles and broke one attacking an orc or something like that. It was hard to break, but the player kept rolling 1's- like 5 in a row. I forget if the PC was brought back to life or not.

I was running an epic at Gameholecon when a player was swallowed by a flying purple worm. He desperately broke his staff of power and was thrilled, it was his first time and only my second as DM. The person running the flying purple worms was the player that was my first.

If I ever found a staff of power or staff of the magi, I would deliberately plan to do this in the campaign finale if I could possibly arrange it.

When DMing Queen of the Demonweb Pits in the 1e days, the player of the magic-user was facing Lolth alone by the end. He made a valiant effort, but was down to his last hit points, and decided he had nothing to lose by breaking his staff of the magi. BOOM! Killed Lolth (who fortunately only had 66 hp in 1e), and was lucky on the followup percentile roll, finding himself teleported to another plane (I don't recall which, but it was somewhere nice) instead of blown to smithereens. Definitely one of the high points of my entire gaming career.
