Boots of Striding and Springing and Jump bonuses

Just wanted to clarify something.

Boots of Striding and Springing, in the DMG, grant the wearer a +10 enhancement bonus to their speed, and a +5 competence bonus to Jump checks. If a medium character donned these, would it give them a total +9 to Jump checks, since a character with a speed of higher than 30 gets a +4 to Jump checks per 10 feet above 30? And, for that matter, wouldn't a Small creature effectively get a +11 (since having a speed of 20 grants them a -6 penalty to their jump checks)?

Note also though, that the user only gets that +5 bonus to standing jump checks. He gets the additional +4 (or +6) bonus only to running jump checks.

Not true.

SRD said:
Your Jump check is modified by your speed. If your speed is 30 feet then no modifier based on speed applies to the check. If your speed is less than 30 feet, you take a –6 penalty for every 10 feet of speed less than 30 feet. If your speed is greater than 30 feet, you gain a +4 bonus for every 10 feet beyond 30 feet.

Things that are faster are naturally better at jumping, regardless of whether they get a running start first.

Well well. *tabs quickly to the SRD* I stand corrected. Strange that I missed that. Thanks, Patryn. Seems counterintuitive, but...*shrug* I'll go with it.

*Edit*
--So, correct me if I'm wrong, but does this mean that a plate-armoured human fighter takes a whopping -12 to his check? (-6 for armour check penalty, -6 for speed) --Then again, I guess that's not surprising, when you imagine someone trying to jump around with 50 pounds of metal plates covering his body...: )

That's the one.

Thanks, everyone. I assumed that was the case (although it never occured to me that Medium Armor gave you a further penalty to Jump checks- I guess I never imagined a character in heavier armor jumping), but I had to make sure.

Redundant adds

Hi,

After realizing that you get two jump bonuses from boots of springing and striding,
a +4 or a +6, and a fixed +5, I got to thinking that the bonuses were redundant.
Unless the intent was to grant +10' move and +10 (avg) to jumps, and the +5 was
set to factor this in, the extra +5 is redundant.

Any thoughts?
