Bardic Music underwater?

First Post
1. Is bardic singing possible underwater?
2. If so, does it have a limited range?

Assuming of course that said Bard cn breathe underwater due to potions/spells etc

This isn't covered the by the core rules, but I'll give it a stab based on the house rules for my aquatic campaign.

1) Yes, a bard with Water Breathing can sing underwater. I'd require some sort of skill check to make sure he sings properly underwater, probably concentration or spellcraft. With Freedom of Movement, he can sing perfectly, although his allies my not hear him perfectly unless they've got Freedom of Movement too. Or, if he knows Aquan songs, I'd allow him to sing those normally with Water Breathing. Freedom of Movement is the way to go, and just give allies a Listen check to see if they hear his singing correctly.

2) Range should increase since sound travels better through water than air. So increase range by about 50% to make the numbers nice and round.

I just read a large thread on casting underwater. Perhaps someone should link to it. One of the issues was that of sound possibly being garbled a little, which could make it harder to perform accurately, although range should in fact be increased. There don't appear to be many official rules on this, though.

What page is the thread on and I'll see if I can put up a link to it? I'm hoping the forthcoming Stormwrack provides a decent underwater rule system beyond the 'nothing's different except for fire' approach of the core rules.

Yeah, that is goofy. I don't remember what page it was on - I closed the window before I saw this thread :( I didn't see it in a quick look at the first five pages of "most recent," though, so it may be hard to dig up.

Does anyone remember the cRPGs where lightning bolt functioned as fireball underwater?

I remember the thread - it was sometime in the past two weeks. Hopefully some kind sir or madam will unearth it for us - I think it was called Casting Underwater.

I don't remember those games. In my current D&D game I did consider making electricity attacks more deadly underwater by increasing their damage rating, but decided that was too much so instead opted to simply increase the DC of electricity based spells, making them harder to resist, but causing the same amount of damage. On average creatures will take more damage since they'll fail more saves, so it's a relatively decent approximation.

*BUMP*

would like to see the casting underwater thread. We had this come up last night. DMG didn't have anything on it in the small underwater combat section.

Given that bardic music's positive effects are range dependent, I'd actually increase their effectivity underwater (sound travels much faster underwater, and thus, is attenuated less at range). I'd double the effective range of bardic music while submersed, assuming that the bard has wate breathing/freedom of movement to actually allow him to sing.
