Barbarians and reach weapons?

I play Toog, an Ogre barbarian. He has reach without weapons. I have had more fun in fights with his reach than my last barbarian who didnt. I say you should go for it, give it a try.

Imagine it this way, think about how effective the barbarian is in the first place in a pitched battle. However, he is side by side with soldiers and fighters. You'll suddenly have a lot of fighters behind you when they realize you can (With Great Cleave) cut a path through their lines before they get a chance to touch you. (Of course, you have to watch out for those ranged weapons...)

Well, I'd be interested in ANY suggestions about an appropriate reach weapon for ANY barbarian. I guess a spear is an obvious good choice--since it is the most primitive weapon of all. But what about a ranseur, glaive, or spiked chain? Could a barbarian use one of those or would it just seem not right?

My particular character happens to be a wild elf barbarian. I'd like to put a ranseur in his hands, but I'm having some reservations about it.

Actually, looking through the books, Im surprised that the weapons I would choose as reach weapons dont count as reach weapons. I would have used a halberd or Urgrosh for an axe-like weapon, but...

In the end, if you're going to do it, you should choose the one that works best for you. Since you are a wild elf, the Ransuer does appear appropriate and somewhat elven.

Keep this in mind, however, that reach weapons cant be used against targets next to you. You need therefore to remember that and put somekind of defense in place for when they tumble past your reach and try to hit close up.

While I'm am not playing a barbarian, I am playing a sohei.

I am currently playing a 1st level LN Orc Sohei (basically a templar of Bane). I took a Glaive and Combat Reflexes.

Tried him out for the first time last night, and this combo works extremely well. The extra AoO's and reach synergize well, allowing him to be offensive and defensive simulaneously. For those times that enemies came through my "hedgewall", I chose a spiked gauntlet as my back-up weapon.

Overall a nice combo, and something very different in feel to the normal Power Attack/Cleave barbarian.

S[ears and Asegai (Zulu half-spears) are obvious Barbarian weapons and the image of the Executioner with his pole-ax has always invoked Barbarian in my mind.

In Polynesia glaive like weapons (Hoeroa, Taiaha) and Spears (Taringavaro, Nifotanifa) were the most common types

So use Barbs with reach weapons does make sense

(the Ax/HAmmer thing is more a viking stereotype (but the so is the standard Barbarian:))

a human barbarian with combat reflexes, and Exotic Wep. Prof: Spiked Chain is extremely potent. It does less damages than, say, a glaive, but it threatens EVERYTHING out to ten feet. Thats the regualr 8 squares, plus an extra three on each side (corners are too far (15 feet), using the standard diagonal counting rules (alternate between 5 and 10 feet away, starting with 5). 20 threatened squares and combat reflexes is nas-ty.

We have a barbarian in our game with a longspear, cleave, great cleave, combat reflexes and power attack. A couple low-level werejackals tried to swarm him once, wasn't pretty. Reach and great cleave is a deadly combination.

I just think that cleaving with a spear is a bit... hard to imagine...
