Background Feats for "Former Priest" trope?

Sir Brennen

Legend
I'm looking to make a character which has as part of his background story the fact that he was once a promising young cleric who has now turned his back on his church and is following another vocation (actually, a vocation that allows him to seek revenge on the church that betrayed him.)

So, without taking an actual starting level of cleric, which I don't plan on ever taking any more levels in, making it a bit of a waste, are there any esoteric feats tucked away in a rulebook somewhere which might be good to represent the "former priest" kind of character? He's still faithful to the deity, or at least an aspect of it, but not the corrupt church organization itself that he once belonged to.

The character will be a GunMage, from the Iron Kingdoms, but the exact class isn't really important. Looking for more general feats that would work for any class.

Any thoughts?

you could try taking a domain devotion feat from the complete champion book. there arent any prerequisites and you could pick one that goes with your deity. hope this helps

Iron Heroes has the Child of Faith background trait (an IH background trait is basically a 1st level only feat) which does more or less exactly what you require.

Priests in most settings are expected to be learned men & women, and people look to them for guidance.

That would mean feats like:
  1. Education
  2. Leadership
  3. Ritual Blessing
  4. Skill Focus
  5. Sacred Vow and any feat that has it as a prereq, including Vow of Poverty.
  6. Many of the feats from BoVD, if your PC is evil.

would all be appropriate.

Oh yeah, seconding the selection of Domain Devotion feats.

Only one that comes to mind, but which I've not yet seen mentioned, is True Believer (from Complete Divine), which lets you use the deity's relics and gives you a once/day +2 insight bonus on a single save.

Great suggestions, all! I didn't even think to look in a book like Iron Heroes, but Child of Faith indeed fits the bill exactly for what I was envisioning. So that'll be my "must have", then perhaps a Domain feat and one of the others suggested here. (Though True Believer would require working with the DM to make appropriate Relics available in the game for the character. Maybe a feat for later on in the campaign.) Education, in particular, would be great for adding the Know. (Religion) skill to a character that doesn't have it on his class skill list.

Thanks!
