D&D 5E Are Apes Gorillas or Chimpanzees?

Gleep Wurp

First Post
Just a question I was pondering. On the one hand, they are Medium creatures, so maybe gorillas, on the other, chimpanzees are pretty tough. I'm wondering for purposes of getting miniatures and also describing things to players. "You see seven gorillas" sounds more intimidating than seven chimps.

To answer the original question: Yes. Both gorillas and chimpanzees are apes. So are humans, orangutans and bonobos. I think that's it, but there might be one more.

I think I'd go with Option C. Orangutans.

I'd go large for Gorillas and small for chimps.

But I'd definitely lean towards gorillas if we really are choosing between just your two options.

The stats could work for either. Both are medium size and both are stronger than a human on average. If you are treating them as aggressive, vicious bastards, I would probably go with Chimp. The fact that the ape throws rocks also suggests chimp to me.

I could see the argument of large-size for a gorilla (they weigh about twice as much as a human), but I don't see small for chimps. Chimps are a bit shorter bu they only weigh slightly less than a human. Kind of like dwarves!

Sure.

I just like filling in all the boxes. I didn't mention it, but the huge apes would be Kongs. And thankfully 5e doesn't have 3e's long list of sizes so I don't have to figure out how to fit the dimunitive or fine boxes.

Well that seems like an admirable goal.

Of course, the true answer to the OP question is "Whatever would frighten your players more!"

Which Kong? The kong from the most recent island was more akin to a kaiju/tarrasque than the giant ape. The kong from Peter Jackson's ... maybe.
