First Post
I have set back to work on creating a completely aquatic campaign. But to do this I have set out to create a line of Aquatic PC races. Be sure to read the descriptions, because I have altered the races somewhat to make them more distinct (an aquatic elf is more than just an elf who lives underwater) and in some cases i have altered the description and abilities to a point where they less resemble the originals. I have decided to post the races one by one, so that each could be commented on originally.
I have to give kudos to Steve Bartell http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/stbartell/index.htm whose ideas i have shamelessly taken and molded to my own desires. ;] if you visit his site, be sure to look under the Fathoms link, where he has a handbook for a 2nd edition aquatic campaign.
Elves
Elves, often called Sea Elves by the surface races, are guardians of the deep. Calling themselves Elonach O’Vallisad, they live in all parts of the ocean, especially the places where evil thrives. Elves have a deep-seated history going back as far, or further than, their elven cousins on land.
However, finding themselves embroiled in the center of the deep-sea conflicts, Elves of the deep have had little time for idle contemplation as their brethren. Elves of the deep see themselves as guardian protectors of the lesser races of the sea. They are serious and at times cold, but within each elven breast beats a heart truer than any other elf.
Personality: Elves are serious minded and fair; they see the safety of other races as paramount. They are steadfast in their pursuit of evil and have little time for “idleness” as they call the typical elf’s penchant for art and leisure. They do share their brother’s pride, however, a trait that leads to arrogance that often proves their downfall.
Elonach O’Vallisad means “custodians of the waters” in their own tongue, and they live up to this name well. From an early age every elf is reminded of this responsibility, and none take it lightly. They often implant this single-minded purpose in other things that they do.
Physical Description: Elves look very much like their surface cousins, having long thin ears and delicate features. Their skin has a silvery green color to it, though a few also have some blue color to it. Their hair is either a blue, deep blue or sometimes green. Like the elves, they like to alter their appearance, though too much clothing is seen to be too impractical to be beautiful; they instead decorate their bodies with tattoos, which are sometimes magical. Elves are typically anywhere from 4¼ to 5’4 feet long, weighing 70 to 120 pounds. Elves reach majority around 34 to 58 years old, and can live anywhere from 400 to 650 years old.
Relations: Elves try to be on good terms with all the races, though their natural charisma and reputation toward arrogance makes them somewhat unpopular. They have gained the respect of the Hai-Nu, though the Hai-Nu finds them somewhat meddlesome. Tritons find them agreeable, and often form alliances when danger becomes near. Quirden and Merfolk find them overly serious, while octofolk resent their pride. Locathah are ambivalent; they find the elves to be fine purchasers of weaponry and armor.
Elves have a particularly nasty relationship with the Sea Devils, and seek out their destruction most of all. Sahuagin and Elves, despite being eternal enemies, seem to have a common link. When Elves are within 100 miles of a Sea-Devil community, every so often a Sahuagin is born looking exactly like an elf. While it is unclear what methods they use, some of these mutants, called malenti, are spared and used as spies; though most are killed on sight.
Alignment: For all their arrogance, elves are a good-hearted race and will put their egos aside when it comes in conflict with their goodness. When it comes to law and chaos, elves tend more toward neutrality in general, but also lean toward chaos.
Elven Lands: The elves will travel to nearly any part of the ocean, but many of their homes are nestled in forests of kelp and reef, hidden from prying eyes. They prefer the wilds to the open ocean, though they fear no portion of the ocean more than the other.
Religion: Elves almost exclusively revere Deep Sashelas, their racial deity. He exemplifies the elven way of life and attitude. He demands his followers to stand up for the lesser races (as a few elves would dare say). Deep Sashelas despises the Sea Devils.
Language: Elven language is derived from that of their surface cousins, though it has been changed greatly. Their alphabet remains the same, but the vocal chords of elves are so different than surface elves that the two languages have split off from one another. This language can also be spoken out of water, because elves have lungs, though they rarely use them.

Adventurers: Many undersea adventurers are elves. They take to the heroic like with relish. In keeping with their belief, elves would adventure not for profit or glory or power, but because it is every good creature’s responsibility to stand up to the wicked.
Elven Racial Traits
·+2 Dexterity, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma: Elves have gained a physical sturdiness unlike their surface brothers, though have given up knowledge for knowledge’s sake, and have done a poor job maintaining a more agreeable disposition.
·Medium-size: As Medium-size creatures, Elves have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
·Elven base speed is 40 feet.
·Low-light Vision: Elves can see twice as far as normal in low-light conditions.
·Proficient with rapier and crossbow. Elves are taught how to use these weapons as soon as they are old enough to lift them.
·+2 racial bonus on Listen, Search and Spot checks. Note that an elf does not have the surface elf’s 6th sense concerning hidden doors.
·Elves have a +1 bonus when fighting or tracking Sahuagin, their mortal enemies.
·Automatic Languages: Elven and Common. Bonus languages: Locathah, Octofolk, Quirden, Merr, Triton, Goblin, Orc, Sahuagin. Elves learn the languages of both their allies and their enemies; especially Sahuagin.
·Favored Class: Ranger. A multiclass elf’s ranger class does not count when determining whether she suffers an XP penalty for multiclassing (see Experience for Multiclass Characters, page 56, PHB) Elves are experienced in fighting and knowledge of the wilds of the sea.
